What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?

Sonic Frontiers (PS4)

May 22nd, 2023

I'm only doing an after work post today because Neocities was down this morning. Today was fine, though. Work was a little relentless, but not bad, and I ate a nice ham sandwich for dinner. I've had a lot of days that are a lot worse.

I did play a lot of games yesterday, with Dragon Quest X Offline being the game to which I dedicated the biggest chunk of time. I wanted to get into the gameplay proper, so I set timers and waded through text 30 minutes at a time, taking notes the whole way, with an end goal of playing for two hours. It felt somewhat hopeless at first, but in the second half of my challenge, I hit some turn based battles! I know this sounds small, and I've taken a pathetically long time to get here, but for me, it feels like a real study victory! I'm quite happy.

Pikmin Bloom took me a fair amount of time in the morning, too, since I had to take a few walks around the block to finish my 30,000 steps for the week. I thought this morning about trying to walk harder during the week to take less pressure off of Sunday, but without that, I just would have sat on my butt all day. I'll keep going along the same path for this week's Pikmin goal, too.

Right before bed, I played Sonic Frontiers for a few minutes, too, but quit because I wasn't having all that much fun. By then, I was really dead tired, so it was more on me than it was the game.

I'm going to try to play a little more Dragon Quext X Offline, and probably something less studious, later on this evening. I'll hopefully be able to make my next update in the morning!

It was really nice to get out of work on time last night and be done with my week! I kind of crashed, and am still there today, but that is okay. It's fine to have a low maintenance weekend.

I've been popping on more DVDs and Blurays lately, which alerted me to the fact that my PS4 has been continually refusing to update. Last night, I figured out how to fix it through a manual, USB update, which was kind of a hassle. Once I got that done, though, I played Sonic Frontiers with some of the patches that had installed since I bought it and absolutely demolished the boss that had been giving me trouble when it first came out. Still, though, I'm not sure how I feel about this game! I don't dislike it, and it feels good to zip around on the rails, but something seems weird and off about it to me. I'll keep going, even if it's not an immediate thing, but will probably finish several far less admired Sonic games first.

From there, I was going to go to bed, but since my building was noisy I played a couple of levels of Mort the Chicken instead. It was kind of weird and frustrating to bounce from a modern, major release platformer to a cheaper PS1 platformer with no buffer, but I got my bearings pretty quickly, buzzed past the level that had crashed in my last play session, and cleared the next one, too. 'Twas pleasurable.

This is not a week for detailed posts, but that is okay. I am going on a small road trip today, albeit not for fluff reasons, and I want to get a post done beforehand.

I played Sonic Frontiers again last night, and even though most of the game is interesting, the camera is so awful I legitimately can't beat the boss I'm working on. I can climb up to the top of it, but then the camera switches to an angle where I can't see Sonic, leaving him to get hit by an energy ball and die while I adjust the camera upwards. I tried just making him go serpentine while I adjust the camera upward again, but then he just falls off of the top of the boss monster, leaving me to repeat the whole process. Earlier in the boss fight, I have some camera clipping issues, too, going straight through the boss's arm when I fall off, but those at least don't lead to a game over. I am stumped as to how to deal with this and win.

The screenshot is not of the boss, because I am too busy making terrible noises and swearing as I try to fight it to take screenshots.

Today is another quick post, since I have to drive in and cough on people in the office today, rather than just coughing at my desk Alexa. I wanted to go to bed at an okay hour last night, so I played Sonic Frontiers for another half hour or so. I got kind of stuck on one of the giant bosses because I kept falling and clipping through the arm I was supposed to run up, but cleared a couple of the tiny challenges. I'll try to fight the boss again tonight or tomorrow.

I'm making a super fast post before work today, with my fingers crossed for a decent start to the week.

I started Sonic Frontiers last night. When it came out, I decided to wait until it was 30 or so dollars to pick it up, not expecting that would happen within the month. I'm not sure what I think about it yet, though, since I only played for an hour or so.

While the game and updates installed on Sonic Frontiers, I played PriPara: All Idol Perfect Stage for a few minutes, too. It's convenient to just have this in my Switch right now.
