What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?

Metal Slug Attack Reloaded (Switch)

December 8th, 2024

Yesterday, I finally tried Sonic and the Black Knight, and don't have too much to say about it so far. It doesn't seem that bad for a late 00s Sonic game or a motion control heavy Wii game, but it's not that great, either. I had a decent time with the first few levels, though, so I'll keep going.

Later on, I played some Metal Slug Attack: Reloaded while chatting with a friend, too. I had to quit and go to bed when I got so tired I couldn't remember how the game's interface worked, and it wasn't even that late! I made some decent progress, though, getting through all the first side stories for the different armies and getting back to the main campaign.

I did some very minor play in Infinity Nikki, too, mostly just burning off all my free gacha pulls and playing with the dress up features. It was fun, but I made no progress.

Last night ended up being a little crazy, so I just played some of the side story content in Metal Slug Attack Reloaded before bed. These seem like they were past in-game events, so it's nice to see them preserved like this after the mobile game's servers were shuttered.

Today, this post is late because I was out doing some nice stuff with family members! As a result, I am rather sleepy and kicking myself for playing so many games yesterday.

My gaming variety was pretty wide yesterday. I downloaded and finished a super-casual Steam freebie called 100 Christmas Cats where I just found 100 cats in a line drawing of a little Christmas town. It only took a little over half an hour, some of that which was my figuring out the zoom controls. It was cute, though, and I got 100 Steam achievements from it. I downloaded nine more of these, because they're free and have cats, so please enjoy being bored by more descriptions of this nonsense in the future.

I spent quite a bit of time with Metal Slug Attack Reloaded, too, gawking at the sprite art and levelling up my units. I'm getting a better grasp on how to approach the tower defense stages, simple as they are, but I wish I could level my units past level 10! Hopefully, I'll hit a player rank that lets me do that soon.

Over on my Miyoo Mini+, which I'd unproductively left on my craft table, I turned on a Game Boy Advance game called Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Big Break because I have some nostalgia for Tiny Toons. I then, in a pleasant surprise, found myself getting whupped by a Treasure beat-em-up. It feels like a simple base game, with some depth to the support system, which lets you call out a second character to attack. Launching tiny enemies up in the air to ram them into bigger ones was extremely satisfying, too. I'll probably give this another shot, but it was a bit more than I wanted to deal with last night.

As if all of that weren't enough, I buzzed through some of the story mode stages in Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade during and after lunch, too. I was satisfied with my progress.

I'm probably not going to play a ton of games tonight, as I am dozin' off already, but I'll be back tomorrow with some sort of post!

I'm just back from errands this morning and doing a quick post before work. I wish I had a little more pep!

Last night, I picked Metal Slug Attack Reloaded back up because I was thinking too much about offline versions of mobile games. I made a little progress, and got somewhat bored with the loads of gacha pulls I had to do to build my team. It wasn't bad, though. This is really low stress to play, so I might keep at it a bit longer this time.

I chipped away at the "map event" in Jujutsu Kaisen: Phantom Parade, too, which mostly consisted of me setting auto battles to go and doing other stuff. It required no skill, and my numbers did not really go up, but it seemed like the most effective way to grind for event items.

July 1st, 2024

It's the start of July, but today's post isn't going to be anything out of the ordinary. I finished the monthly event in Fashion Dreamer last night, and am ready to set the game aside for a couple of weeks again. I need to tackle unlocks from NPCs and level grinding in this at some point, but it won't be right now.

I did a 40 minute session of Walk It Out!, too, trying to get enough steps to unlock 25 event bubbles. I put a lot of streetlights and trees around the game's little island, and unlocked some songs, too. It said I walked in place 1.2 miles while chasing that goal, but since walking in place is not computing well for me, for whatever reason, I did a bad job at it and am mega sore today. It doesn't make sense to me that I can't figure out the mechanics of something so basic, but I'll keep trying when I've got time for longer workouts.

I did a little level grinding in Metal Slug Attack Reloaded right before bed, already having hit the game's first difficulty spike. I cleared the stage that was giving me trouble, though, and am ready to see my little soldiers get one-shotted in lovely new locales.

June 30th, 2024

Today is the last day of June, bringing me to four games cleared for the month just under the wire! None were RPGs, and none were on GamePass, either, but that is okay. I'm not going to set any goals like that for next month because I don't actually care very much. I'd still like to clear four games again, but without worrying about genre or system.

Yesterday, I cleared Martial Knight, which was a very frustrating experience! The workouts themselves were fine, and were able to clear some shoulder tension that's bothered me for ages, so it wasn't worthless. The game itself doesn't work very well, though. I'm super willing to forgive the strange, asset flip-y looking graphics, but the motion controls were very inconsistent. Plus, scoring itself broke for some moves near the end of the game, not even registering misses. It made the game feel inherently broken. I probably will boot this back up the next time my shoulders hurt too much to focus on my work, but I still wish it worked better.

After finishing that, I booted up Walk It Out!, a very literal walking simulator for Wii scored by Konami's stable of 00s DJs. I just heard of this recently and picked it up right away, not feeling disappointed by my first mile walked-in-place at all. I'm probably going to play again after this post to see how this looks in the daylight, though, since this is linked to real time. I had my Wii clock set wrong when I took this screenshot, so it's not always so dark!

I started in on Metal Slug Attack Reloaded before bed, too, and don't really have many thoughts on it yet. It's definitely a gacha game ported over to Switch as a standard release, for better or worse, but I'm kind of looking forward to participating in power creep without paying up for it. Plus, I don't play enough tower defense stuff to be sick of the genre, which works in my favor here.

I also played a couple more sets of missions in Fashion Dreamer and am hoping to polish off the June event tonight or tomorrow. I'm cutting it pretty close, so I'd at least like to nab the last photo frame before it ends.
