What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?

Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight (PS4)

October 3rd, 2022

Last night, I finally cleared Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, having viewed all social events, unlocking everything, and earning the PS4 platinum trophy. Finishing games I like gives me very mixed feelings, and I will probably come back to this to do some high score chasing, and just because it's fun.

A few hours after that, I started in on Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, which is fine, seeing as it is functionally the same game. Still, I did not play long enough to shake my feeling of "the UI is different and wrong," which will fade soon enough. I don't know if I'll play this with much dedication for a while, but I'm happy to have it on hand. (Since I bought the bundle in a PS Store a couple years ago, which should tell you all a lot about my lighting fast speed at getting to games, I have the dancing game for Persona 4 in my library, too.)

October 2nd, 2022

I thought I was going to be able to clear Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight last night, but due to my own dingbattery, I failed! A bad combinations of a pizza dinner, slightly higher temperatures, and the first person card hunts in the characters' rooms gave me a wild case of motion sickness that put me totally out of commission two inches from the finish line. Alas!

I'll probably finish this off today, though, and might even play a bit before lunch. Sundays are great for meeting goals that don't really matter in the long run.

October 1st, 2022

It's already October, and I never thought I'd keep this blog going so long! It's not like it's been any hardship to post daily, but I thought I'd get distracted and quit. I'm glad I haven't, though.

Checking back on my games played last month, I only cleared three- Loud, which was fine, but too short, Macbat 64, which I was completely taken with and was also too short, and Shock Troopers, which definitely had a tiny sprite of an anime girl single-handedly taking down a tank. As far as my goal of clearing ten games goes, it's not awesome, but considering that my former average number of games cleared in a month was zero, it's not bad.

That being said, I'm pretty set to start off October by clearing Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight this weekend. I thought that maybe I'd be able to artificially boost my playtime by chasing some of the "view all of this specific character's dances" trophies, but I've been playing long enough that when I sat down to chase that last night, I got the two I had left within 15 minutes. There's two social events left to view and a few trophies remaining, and then this is done. It's so fun that it's a little disappointing, but I have a few choices in mind to tackle after this.

I also played a little bit of Fatal Fury: First Contact on the Switch Neo Geo Pocket collection last night. I have this game for my real Neo Geo Pocket Color, too, but backlighting and rechargable batteries are fine pieces of modern technology. Alfred is such a pain in the butt to unlock that I don't think I'll totally clear this at any point in the near future, but fighting games are fun.

September 30th, 2022

I'm doing a quick before work post today. I woke up and couldn't breathe, so I had to take my inhaler and am having trouble sitting still, which is great with eight and a half hours or more at my desk ahead. Oh, well.

I kept after getting all of the socials cleared in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight last night. Today's screenshot shows easy mode because I was using it to play with some of the challenge modifiers. Getting the trophy for "note speed fluctuates" and "note paths waver" was disorienting, but it was an interesting way to play!

I wanted to go to bed after playing that for a while, but felt too unsettled to sleep and played a couple rounds of Sonic Runners Adventure. I still kind of hate this game, and didn't even bother grabbing a screenshot without my phone's volume controls visible. It did the job and got me tired enough to pass out, though, so it has its uses.

I feel like I am not doing great this week. I feel so tired and super stressed out during work, even though nothing that bad is going on. Last night, I could have gotten a call that forced a considerable amount of overtime with no credit, and even though it never came through, the pressure of waiting felt so extreme that I got a stress headache, ate a Totino's Party Pizza from Dollar General, and did a lot of wall staring. I basically like my job, too, I don't know what my problem is.

Before bed, though, I forced myself to play a few songs in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, which netted me more progress than I expected. I'm optimistic about my ability to clear this game, and wondering if I might be able to score the Platinum Trophy for it, too.

Lunch break post today! I got an hour forced overtime last night, which isn't even bad, but has somehow left me bereft of pep even 16 hours later. I did play Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight a lot again before bed. This may be an awfully hot take, but I'm gonna come out and say it- video games are a little more fun than work.

September 27th, 2022

I'm posting before work again, after successfully forcing myself on another morning walk. Last night, I played Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight quite a bit, and think I have a gameplan to clear all the socials. It'll be a little grindy for a couple of them, but the music game is really fun, so I'm not disappointed about that at all. I might actually get this game cleared pretty soon.

September 23rd, 2022

My work lunch was two hours late today, so I was too hungry to waste any time posting during it. I'm doing this post during a classy 9:00pm store brand lunchables dinner. It was an Aldi organic one, though, the ham part of it was fantastic.

My first game last night was Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, doing a minimal, but effective, three songs and unlocking a social event. It was the last one for Aegis, and thank god the card was easy to find! The first person card finding bonus game is way too motion sickness inducing.

After that, it was more Balan Wonderworld before bed. I'm still too lazy to really write about this, but hey, maybe someday! I beat the first boss and found enough of the Balan Statues to unlock worlds two and three

September 8th, 2022

It's another late post today. My focus and energy are just awful the past few days. Last night was also another night where I got myself to play games for a few minutes to cheer up before bed, opting for a few rounds of Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight. It's really nice to have a game on tap where I can make scattershot progress by just picking songs and going for it. I even unlocked another social event, which I hadn't even set as a goal for myself! It's good to make progress despite myself.

September 3rd, 2022

Yesterday, I got off work without hassle ahead of a three-day weekend, putting me in a good mood to start playing games late and then stay up much longer than I should have.

First up, I wanted to play with the character creator in PriPara: All Idol Perfect Stage, a port of the PriPara arcade game and loading time simulator that, despite its inability to efficiently render a pair of pants, is a mainstay in my gaming library. I made my new idol unit, dressed them up, and then played some of the songs I like in it before popping the game back in the Ace Attorney Trilogy box. (I moved back to the US three years ago, I should really get on ordering some replacement Switch game cases.) It wasn't a long play session, nor did this fulfill any game completion goals, but who cares? It's shiny.

I kept going with music games after that, turning Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight back on. I got three social events unlocked last night, which I felt pretty good about, and had enough fun that I lost track of time playing. As I near the end of this game, I'm glad I have two more games in the series waiting in the wings for me.

Since I hit a point where I beat a song, looked at the time, and thought, "wow, it's later than I thought, I should go to bed," I naturally picked up my DS for a few minutes of My Sims. I am starting to sincerely doubt that there is a lot to this game, but I'm also not sure I care. Despite my disappointment that I likely will not be able to make a bacon couch like I could on the Wii, it is pleasant.

August 31st, 2022

It's the last day of August, and I have another game finish to report today, with the stunning conclusion of Mahjong Stories: Vampire Romance! This game got screamingly tedious, since the layouts just got more and more tiles instead of getting more difficult, but the story didn't have a bad ending, as far as things go. The game overstayed its welcome by a mile, and I'm glad I'm done with it, but it wasn't awful. Plus, I'm at 3 of 10 games cleared for my goal now!

I tried to get a little further in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight after that, and got two social events and a trophy, which was pretty good. I'd forgotten how motion sick I got trying to find the cards in all of the characters' rooms, so I don't intend to do a lot of those in a night, even if I unlock them. Finishing games is somewhat satisfying, but puking isn't.

With my mahjong game done, I then tried to find another game to play before bed and guessed incorrectly. The Sims 2 Pets might be something I pick up again later, but last night, it did not click. I think that this, in large part, may have been because I didn't know how Sim creation would go and I felt like I did a bad job with that. The control felt really imprecise, too, which was driving me crazy dealing with the titular pets. Regardless of the reasons why I'm abandoning it for now, though, I'm going to try one of the DS My Sims games instead tonight.

August 30th, 2022

I had big video game plans last night, but got sleepy, went to Subway, and totally abandoned them! Instead, I decided to give another go to a couple games that have only popped up in one post here. Today, though, I got up early fearing an internet outage during work. Since my internet is working, I have nothing to stress about on that front and the time to detail my incremental progress before my shift.

After some daily life stuff last night, I went and laid flat on my back in bed and played Sonic Runners Adventure for a few levels, which I hadn't touched since my train ride earlier this month. Freed of being stuck on an Amtrak train, I have to say that this game is barely engaging, and the level layout is super repetitive. Also, despite seeming pretty basic, it crashed my phone. I unlocked Charmy the Bee, though, which was super cute, and got a small feeling of "wow, I'm great at this game" for getting a lot of three star ranks on levels. I'm just glad this is something I could, theoretically, finish.

My trouble for the night started after that, when I went to play Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight. My internet went out just a couple minutes before I clicked the PS4 on, and the machine didn't want to do anything. It threw up error messages when I turned it on, the game was tough to start because it wanted to check for DLC, and I couldn't check my trophies easily after getting during gameplay. Once I got everything up and running it was fine, at least until the system stalled out when I tried to put it to sleep. My goal was to score one social event, so I played a couple songs and pulled that off. I'm actually over half done with this, so I might stick with it. It's fun, and getting all the social events seems doable.

Last, and certainly least, I finished another set of puzzles in Mahjong Stories: Vampire Romance, leaving me two stages from the end. I met the vampire, and, after seeing all of his minions die at the hands of my mahjong solitaire skills, he decided that the best way to defeat me, the master of tile matching, is with, of course, more mahjong solitaire. I don't think he's great at problem solving.

May 30th, 2022

I played two games yesterday, with Persona 3: Dancing In Moonlight being up first, mostly because I did not feel like washing the dishes. I played three songs. Since it had been a few weeks since I last played, I played them very badly, too! It was fun, though. Sega makes solid music games.

After that, before bed, I played Sonic Adventure again. I only played one level because Tails was giving me motion sickness, but I'll stay further back from the computer screen for my next round.
