What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?

Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

September 30th, 2023

My power level is at zero today, but I cleared the forest area in Super Mario Odyssey last night. I shut it off right after because the cloud stage that came next looked like a hassle at that moment.

With some shock that I met one of my goals, I can say that I managed to play Super Mario Odyssey ten times within the month of September, making strides against my extremely poor attention span. I'm going to carry it forward for at least five play sessions into October, and choose a different "focus game" for the month. I'm not sure what it'll be yet, and need to decide pretty quickly!

As far as things went with Super Mario Odyssey last night, though, I wandered off the path the game told me to follow and picked up five or so moons. I did a foggy area that made my hands sweat like crazy, even though it wasn't very difficult, and had a nice time.

I'm back on my real schedule today, wide awake and with a McDonald's iced coffee at my side as a special sugary treat! Changing my sleep schedule, only by a couple of hours and only for a few days, messed me up so badly I can hardly believe it, but I feel excellent today. My gaming yesterday was not really that notable, though. I played Super Mario Odyssey for another 45 minutes or so, exploring a world of gardening robots. This game is very charming.

The basic training for my new job ended today, so I get to go back to my normal late schedule tomorrow! I'm really relieved, since I haven't slept well for a few days, and am excited to start something new, too.

Yesterday, I got off work and immediately blew an hour playing Super Mario Odyssey, getting through the water level. It was pretty lovely. I really liked the bubble architecture, and the colors and music were really relaxing. I'll start the forest level today, but I'm honestly a bit less excited about it.

I'm so sleepy today, but good! I started training for my new position today, but since the schedule for training is 2+ hours earlier than my normal schedule, I'm zoned out tonight. That is okay, though! Even if I'm dozing off before 8pm tonight, things will be good overall.

Last night, I played Super Mario Odyssey for a few minutes when I should have been sleeping, picking up a few basic moons in the water world. Being able to play as a Cheep Cheep takes away some of the stress I normally feel in Mario water levels, which is cool. Plus, the colors are so peaceful and lovely!

I played Disney Tsum Tsum quite a lot, too, but hit a wall in the monthly event's end game. I would have to get a 3 million-plus high score with a tsum wearing a collar to move forward, which is definitely possible! It would take more level grinding than I'm willing to do, though, so I'm letting it go. I feel more at peace now having abandoned this goal.

I'm way more interested in sleeping than gaming right now, but'll play something for a few minutes to wind down later.

My PC is staunchly set against working this morning, so this'll be a shorter post than intended. I played Super Mario Odyssey for a few minutes before bed last night, though, which was fun. I cleared an underground temple and floated away to the next world, but didn't actually do anything there.

Today is my last day in my current work department, and I have tomorrow off. It's a decent feeling.

Yesterday I was too set on crafts to play games too hard, and went to a greenhouse sale, too. It was a calm and lovely day.

I did get a moon in Super Mario Odyssey, though, briefly remembering that this was my "game of the month." I'd like to get ten play sessions in for this by the end of September, which still seems doable.

Yesterday was crazy, so I didn't play too much. To keep going with Super Mario Odyssey, I set myself the goal of grabbing one moon. On Saturday, I'd really frustrated myself with a simple "find three sheep and get them to their keeper" mission, so I thought it would be satisfying to knock that out. Last night, though, I found all three sheep in pretty short order, so I didn't end up playing for very long. I was tired, so that was fine.

This is maybe less easily defensible online, but I spent the last week devouring a directly pre-COVID set of Robotech comic trade paperbacks I had purchased and never read during lockdown. Yes, Robotech is a bastardization of better original anime series, but I find the way it continues to iterate upon itself after the three anime were initially smushed together, spiraling into something of its own, really fascinating. The comics I was reading were pretty interesting in and of themselves, too, using that messiness as a storytelling device, so I spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon very excited about Robotech.

Because of that, and because I want to get vaguely competent at hori shooters before Macross: Shooting Insight comes out, I turned on Robotech: The Macross Saga HD Edition on my Switch. This is a port of an old GBA game, and I don't think it's bad, but I'm terrible at it and can't beat the first level. Part of this is my own fault. Even though I have at least tested all of the characters at this point and get slightly further with everyone other than Max, I gotta play as Max because I like him best. Even if it were just in terms of aesthetics, it would still be important to me to play as the character with glasses and the blue mech.

I only played for ten or so minutes yesterday, since I needed to go do something else, but in those few minutes, my pilot suffered countless firey deaths. Someday, I will get to level two.

I'm good today, but my focus is still super poor, so this won't be a very long post. Super Mario Odyssey was my main game again yesterday, as I got set on grabbing another five moons. Some of the gameplay tricks, even this early in the game, were pretty clever. I swore profusely while trying to pull it off, but there was a little dungeon where you have to see and then memorize the positions of invisble platforms that was really neat. To balance that, there were also a couple of immensely low effort moons to grab, with one being as simple as "the ground is glowing, ground pound it!" I'm still enjoying this quite a lot.

I went back into Idol Land Pripara again, too, and though I was able to do a lot of in-game shopping, I found myself really frustrated by the load times again. Even though it's a free app, and one for a franchise I really like, I'm pretty out of patience with it.

Today is a somewhat strange day, so I don't know what I will or won't play. Either way, though, I'll be back tomorrow.

September 2nd, 2023

I've still got some residual tiredness from the week, but with a three-day weekend ahead, I feel somewhat okay today.

Last night, I sat down to play Super Mario Odyssey a bit before bed, setting the goal that I wanted to get five moons before I shut it off. It was a bit faster than I expected, since the second world started with my waltzing into a store and flat out buying one. I'm still right at the start of the the game, though, so it makes sense that things are going so quickly.

My ability to focus has been horrendous since I got off work last night, so I don't know what I'll play today. I'll be back and posting again tomorrow, though, regardless.

Using gift wrap tape on my glasses wasn't perfect, but it was enough to get things mostly back to normal for me. I still very much would like one of my new pairs of glasses ASAP, but for now, I can cheerfully declare it the start of a new month on this frivolous blog! For September, I want to play through Super Mario Odyssey. I borrowed it from my mom and want to be able to give it back to her instead of just holding onto it forever. Last night, I only got the first power moon, but it felt so good to play so far! I'm really looking forward to playing more.

Currently, I am filled with existential dread at what this Friday will hold at work, but at least I have a three day weekend to look forward to.
