What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?

Dr. Mario 64 (Nintendo Switch Online)

August 2nd, 2023

Today will be a shortish post due to some tech trouble and being awake trouble.

I wanted to play House Flipper as my "game I abandoned" last night, but I'd uninstalled it from my XBox and didn't want to wait around. While I waited, I turned Eastern Exorcist on, which I ended up turning back off pretty quickly because I was too tired for the long play session I'd want to spend with the game. I beat one boss, but it wasn't much play at all.

From there, I wanted to wind down and House Flipper still hadn't redownloaded, so after months away, I picked Dr. Mario 64 back up. This is a version of Dr. Mario that plays well and has no major issues, but it plays the wrong music, so unfortunately, I don't like it. It is very arbitrary, but luckily, in life, no one really forces you to play the versions of puzzle games you don't prefer. This is a passing problem.

Today, I got a pretty decent website update done! I added a Cleared Games page to my website and header, mostly for my own somewhat boring purposes. I feel like I play a lot of different games, but end up getting more games than I can possibly play. Because of that, I want to clear some of the games I have, which the Cleared Games page will help me track. Right now, I want to clear ten games, which counts games on online services and mini consoles, before I buy another one. (This doesn't count the two or three preorders I have floating around online.) Ideally, I will be able to accomplish this in time to buy Persona 5 when the port comes out for Switch, and I might end up scumming some of my shorter indie games to do it. Progress is progress, though, so I'm okay with that for myself.

Yesterday was a bigger day for my inexplicable ability to spend three hours making a recipe called "15 Minute Vegetable Curry" than it was for my playing games, but I did play a couple more rounds of the story mode in Dr. Mario 64. I really don't like this version of Dr. Mario, at least not the versus mode against the AI. On the NES/Famicom, it's one of my favorite puzzle games, but there's something really unsatisfying about playing this against the computer that I can't quite pinpoint. Superficially, I really like the 8-bit music for the game, none of which is in the N64 version, and the overall color scheme is unappealing, too. It's not terrible, and I still enjoy the base game, but this isn't my preferred version of it by a longshot.

I'm so sleepy today, so this post is kind of late. On Saturday, though, I had to get a new phone, which I got to play with some on Sunday. I downloaded Pikmin Bloom, which seems to be an extremely low maintenance take on Pokemon Go. It's cute, it's no hassle, and there's flowers. I'm all for it.

Aside from that, though, I was really tired. I had my PSP out and ready to go, but felt like it just wasn't worth the effort. Instead, I picked up my Switch and used the online service to play Dr. Mario 64. Story mode is fun, but I can't really say I like this better than the NES/Famicom version. I do like Dr. Mario, so I can't say I had a bad time, but this version wasn't clicking with me last night.

I also couldn't get through the daily missions in Ensemble Stars. An office/idol work campaign started up, which I'll write more about later in the week, but getting through any of the rhythm game stages just wasn't happening. I'll probably skip over a lot of it again tonight and get to bed early.
