What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?
Dragon Quest X Offline (Switch)
July 19th, 2023
From now on, my new measure of what an uneasy feeling person I am is going to be that, when one of my friends wanted to use the XBox online services to play Halo: Combat Evolved co-op, I panicked because I don't play many shooters, downloaded it ahead of time, and cheat played the first mission on my own to make sure I'm not dead weight. I played Halo 2 multiplayer about 15 years ago, so I did not feel prepared for such a challenge.
Actually, it turns out I was fine, and maybe didn't need to worry, which is also usually true. I'm not sure what I expected, but it felt "gamier" than I expected, and my fears about the controls being too complicated were totally unfounded. It's not like I did amazingly, but I wasn't awful, either, and that's enough.
I also picked Dragon Quest X Offline back up last night, just to do a few battles, and think I know where I need to go next. It's a good feeling.
June 29th, 2023
My post today is pretty down to the wire, since there's only 32 minutes left to post within the day as I start this. This is the first post that'll cover a trip to Chicago I just got back from, though, since I managed to get tickets to see Twice at the United Center a few months back! When I was living in Japan, they first hit there, so it's been exciting to see them get bigger alongside other K-pop here, too, since coming back to the US. It was weird enough being able to throw their new mini-albums in the cart during grocery runs at Target, but seeing them in an American arena was very surreal! The show was really fun, though, with an almost variety show setup that gave them enough breaks to keep going for two and a half hours, and I had an extremely good time.
The below photos are not so much the best ones I got, so much as the ones I thought would look best with my color scheme here.
As far as games went, I didn't play so much. On the plane, I picked Vengeful Heart back up for a few minutes of public transit visual novel goodness, but I was inexplicably nervous about being on the plane, so I really just played for ten or so minutes. I'll have a lot more to say about this tomorrow.
While hanging out and waiting for the concert, I also played Dragon Quest X Offline for an hour or so on a family member's extremely large TV. I got pretty lost, but am still having fun, so I'll go back to my starting point and figure out how to turn my quest map marker on in my next play session.
Tomorrow's post will have more travel stuff in it, with a couple of photos from today's tourism. For now, I am going to sleep extremely well.
June 28th, 2023
Today I'm going on a bit of a trip, but I got kind of worried for no good reason and was only able to sleep four hours last night! Luckily, I'm not driving, and I have plenty of chances at coffee, so it should be okay.
Yesterday, I did end up dodging the bad air quality by going to play Pikmin Bloom at the mall, and finally got some hydrangea petals! Even though that let me clear the mission I was stuck on, I get the feeling it'll ask me to plant more hydrangeas soon. Hopefully, I'll find more in the next couple of days.
Before bed, I played Dragon Quest X Offline for a bit, too, and was able to level up a bit more and then find a camp with a church to save at and a new set of armor to buy! My next in-game goal is going to be to get that armor.
Today will involve enough downtime that I think I'll end up playing Switch quite a lot. I'm not quite sure what I'll play yet, but I'll have a shiny new post about it tomorrow night!
June 27th, 2023
Yesterday was fine, but I don't have a lot to say about the games I played. I went to see Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse instead of playing a lot of stuff, which was a good choice!
I did grind out a few levels in Dragon Quest X Offline late last night, translating a bit of skill tree stuff to make sure I wasn't screwing my character over due to lack of basic Japanese reading ability. It was fun, but not super noteworthy.
I wanted to play Pikmin Bloom quite a lot today, but the air quality here isn't good enough to walk outside. In a few minutes, I might go to the mall just to get a little playtime in, but this'll be a big day for staying indoors.
June 19th, 2023
I had trouble getting up and going this morning, so this'll be a super quick post. I enjoyed a bit of exploring and battling in Dragon Quest X Offline.
I also, very practically, made another create a character in Soul Calibur 6. Tracksuits were all the rage in the 16th century.
Seven work days are left until my vacation.
June 18th, 2023
I'm doing my Sunday morning post right now with a very scattered brain. Since getting this started, I've done some online shopping, paid my internet bill, and bandaged a (very minor!) foot injury. It's not unproductive, but it doesn't reflect great focus, either.
Yesterday was an excellent games day, though! Right after posting here, I sat down for a couple hours to clear Sonic Colors Ultimate. On my post comments a few days ago, fellow Neocities webmaster Anonicus had mentioned the game having some glitches. Reading that, I was somewhat disappointed that I hadn't really seen many glitches. The other night, though, when I was fighting the final boss for the Asteroid Coaster world, one of the boss's attacks would fill Sonic's path up with asteroids, all of which were unavoidable and lodged into the ground. I quit while I was trying to deal with that, mildly infuriated and sure that the boss battle was an impossible task.
That, of course, was a glitch, and when I turned it on Saturday morning, the asteroids were up in the air where they belonged, perfectly avoidable. The final stretch of this game was actually really fun, with a very satisfying Eggman boss, and extremely, comically long end credits. The game even gave me a trophy for getting through the credits! All that being said, I don't really intend to go back and 100% this. It was uneven, and I just have other stuff I'd rather play. I liked it way better than I expected I would from my first couple play sessions, though, and that's nice!
Plus, now I've got a game clear on the board for my "clear 10 games goal" I started about a month ago! I preordered Sonic Origins Plus way before setting this goal, and it'll supposedly show up at the end of next week, so I'm wondering if I'll be able to add any Game Gear games to that total.
My other big goal cleared yesterday was getting through the conversation I was stuck in over in Dragon Quest X Offline! Once I finished that, I saved my game and hit some random battles, finally reaching the good stuff. By good stuff, of course, I mean skill trees. I'm looking forward to playing this more today, even if I'll largely just be aimlessly messsing around.
Way later, I also decided that I wanted to pick up another PS4 game to clear and landed on Soul Calibur VI, the normal choice for 2023. I had a file started from before I started this site, but it had been so long since I played that I decided to just start from scratch. Here, I figure that I'll count this as a clear if I beat both the standard and create-a-character story modes, the latter of which I was playing with last night.
I also built another Gunpla yesterday, this time tackling a Uniqlo branded RX-78 that I got free with a couple of T-shirt. I don't think I'd ever built a proper HG Gunpla before, so I had to go over to the craft store and get an X-acto knife to clear some of the pesky plastic nubs that kept it from snapping together properly. While working on this, I definitely gained good EXP.
Today, I hope to be only slightly less useless than I was yesterday, and wish all of you lovely Sundays (or Mondays, depending on your time zone), too.
June 17th, 2023
It's so nice that it's the weekend! I'm not very ambitious today, but I did start a non-games page today, to post some of my poorly built Gunpla and models from other franchises. Right now, I'm trying to build through the stash of cheap kits I've gathered, so yesterday I started things off easy with a cute little Justi'gGuy, as I love the little bears. The eyes and nose are painted on, so I got the colors I wanted, but the rest is just stickers.
In actual games, I played another two levels of Sonic Colors Ultimate last night, leaving me at a boss that was pretty infuriating. After I'm done posting today, I'm probably going to turn on my PS4 to hurl profanity at little Sonic again, as it is obviously the character's fault that I am bad at the game.
I also gave the conversation I'm stuck in over in Dragon Quest X Offline another go. I made progress, but was a little too tired at the end of the workweek for kanji study, so I didn't finish. Hopefully, I'll get this over with today or tomorrow!
June 12th, 2023
I've only got 12 work days left before I get to take a small break. Doing a countdown like this is maybe a little childish, but it's helpful, too.
My focus was bad yesterday, so I didn't play anything so well. I finished Aquarium World in Sonic Colors Ultimate, though in my first play session, I got frustrated with the boss and swore never to play it again. A few hours later, I was feeling somewhat calmer and took it out pretty quickly from there.
I'd been looking forward to actually getting into playing Dragon Quest X Offline, but spoke to who I was supposed to and got locked in another cutscene. I read through a lot of it, but since I didn't feel very well, I got overwhelmed and quit for the day. Maybe I'll try to tackle it again tonight, if today ends up being doable.
I did play a bit of Disney Tsum Tsum again, too, but without getting any great scores or accomplishing anything. It's a good weekend game in that regard.
June 11th, 2023
It took me a while to build up to posting here today, but I've made it! I've done some other writing, cleaning, and crafts so far today, but for some reason, posting here seemed more daunting than those activities, but somehow less daunting than tossing together some quick pickled bean sprouts for a work lunch side dish. My brain is a mystery even to itself.
Yesterday I did play a lot of games, with Eastern Exorcist being what I spent the most time with. The short quests and constant ability to level up keep me playing for way longer sessions than I intend, so I deliberately didn't play this as much as I wanted after work last week. My fascination with it is not conducive to getting to bed on time. As far as things go, though, I'm getting close to the end of my first character playthough. Even though there's only two characters, I'm curious to see how different the story is for each.
Sticking with the XBox, I got the garden in PowerWash Simulator 100% clean and decided to take care of the playground next. Bright colors and shiny surfaces make it very satisfying.
In Dragon Quest X Offline, I also finished the cutscene I was trapped in and am ready to tackle some real gameplay! I'm mildly excited to finally get into the meat of the game, even though that won't cut back on the study side of it too much.
Last and also kind of least, I played Disney Tsum Tsum for a bit, too. I'm not pursuing anything in particular from the gacha or trying to finish the event for the month, so I was just kind of using it to kill time. It was satisfying in that regard.
I don't feel like my writing is very coherent today, so I'm going to go dump some citrus quick pickling liquid on some veggies and stay awake. It's perfect for a Sunday.
June 7th, 2023
It was still hard to get out of bed this morning, but since I'm just taking a frozen meal for my work lunch today, it matters a little less. My sleep was really poor, though, so I'm hoping for a merciful day.
I didn't finish cleaning the garden in PowerWash Simulator last night, but I did a smaller level, where I cleaned a motorbike.
In Dragon Quest X Offline, I tackled about 12 or 13 more text boxes, but since I'm in an "introduce some characters and the world" style cutscene, it seems like it could still stretch on for a while after last night's reading session, too. Language learning sometimes sucks.
June 6th, 2023
Today's post is late just because I was having trouble getting out of bed this morning. I think I could have made a post in the time I had, but I decided to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my office lunch instead. It was a good choice; today's lunch was particularly satisfying.
Last night wasn't a lot games-wise. I read through 12 or so text boxes in Dragon Quest X Offline, which was better progress than it might sound like.
I played Eastern Exorcist for a bit over an hour, though, only quitting because I felt like I needed to force myself to go to bed. I couldn't sleep well, so clearly, this was my loss. The episodic structure and getting boss fights doled out every few minutes makes it a bit harder to put down than I expected, so it was easy to sit down for "just a few minutes" and play for over an hour. Needing a few different sorts of items to pick up and level abilities gives it a bit of a mobile game-y feel, even though it's not pay to win in the slightest. That's not a complaint, though, so much as it just seems slightly interesting.
I'm still super sleepy, so I don't know if I'll make it much of anywhere in any games tonight. That's okay, though.
June 5th, 2023
I'm not feeling well today, so I was in bed too long and now am up, technically dressed, and trying to get myself to drink some tea while I post here.
I went through a little more text in Dragon Quest X, but forgot to get a screenshot because I was feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. I'm in another run of text boxes, so it wouldn't have been very exciting, anyway.
On my PS4, I ended up playing a few more stages of Sonic Colors Ultimate, where I'm getting more in the groove of it. The controls maybe feel a bit off to me in spots. Sonic is so small on the massive screen at points that it's hard to double jump to another platform, since the game reads me as close enough to be autotargeting and attacking enemies instead. Mostly, I had fun, though. I hit some interesting platforming and a good boss fight, so I'm a bit less down on this than I was before.
I played some more of Eastern Exorcist a bit later, too, but forgot how to parry from yesterday and wasn't doing as well as I might have liked.
Today, I'll probably do my best to find something easy to play so I don't just sleep. Just sleeping does have a certain appeal, but I want to keep some sort of structure so I can get back into things well and not fall behind tomorrow.
May 30th, 2023
I got really determined to clear the first part of Dragon Quest X Offline yesterday, so I sat down for a bit over two hours to play/study. By the end of it, I had achieved my goal, but felt so overwhelmed that not only was I burned out on studying Japanese for the day, I had also perhaps forgotten a good chunk of English. Of course that wasn't true, but it was a unique feeling.
I also played maybe six or so more levels in Sonic Colors Ultimate, which is aesthetically neat, but still striking me as a bit blah.
May 29th, 2023
Today is my one-year on Neocities post, but it doesn't feel very special. I'm more surprised I haven't failed or given up at this than anything. I played a lot of games yesterday, though, so at least it won't be a tiny post.
My biggest goal for the day was to continue plugging away at Dragon Quest X Offline. I did okay at it, playing for about 90 minutes and making it through a decent chunk of character text. I feel like I understand what's going on and am making good progress, even though I'm at ten-plus hours for the prologue alone. That is okay, though! Playing a game in Japanese is difficult, and it's okay if I am not going very quickly at it.
I started a couple of new games while I was just messing around with stuff, too, the first of which was Sonic Colors Ultimate. I don't really have many thought on this so far. It's basically fun to play and there are a few too many cutscenes, but it doesn't seem all that interesting so far. That's probably kind of a harsh thing to say, since I did enjoy what I got through and'll definitely keep playing. It felt a bit "just kind of there," though, which is fine.
I tried Lawn Mowing Simulator on Game Pass, too, which I think'll fit well as a game that helps me go to sleep. I do kind of hate that I can't change the color of the business logo, or at least that I couldn't figure out how to do it. It's nice and mindless, though, and'll help take away the sting of not being able to play Calm Colors when I get stuck on a text wall in Dragon Quest and have to leave my Switch in standby.
Last, and perhaps also least, I've been doing daily logins on Disney Tsum Tsum to get the free gacha tickets and nabbed the month's special tsum, Luke Skywalker with a tiny lil' R2D2, with yesterday's. I played a few rounds to try the character out and, since it has double skills and takes up two tsums on the playfield, it levels up at double speed and cranks up the number of coins you can score per game. It is fantastically game breaking, and I'm looking forward to destroying some score records when I'm more in the mood to play again.
That's it for today, but here's to another year on Neocities! It's really fun to have a website here, and such a nice, helpful community! I'm of course looking forward to working on this site, but also to seeing all of the beautiful sites that more ambitious coders are making, too. Let's have another good year!
May 28th, 2023
Yesterday, the only game I played was Dragon Quest X Offline, but I made pretty good progress in crawling through text boxes and think I'll get to do some more gameplay today.
Games and crafts are my only big remaining plans for the day, since I've already been out to run errands, picking up such exciting things as toilet paper and dish soap. I'm kind of sleepy, and my allergies are still really wearing me down, but I think it'll be a good day.
May 23rd, 2023
Today is a pretty simple post, since I decided it was more important to eat a morning peanut butter and jelly sandwich than it was to make a good post here. I was pretty sleepy last night, so my first effort to gain further ground in Dragon Quest X Offline ended in an unplanned 45 minute nap. After regrouping, I set a timer and played for 20 more minutes of text box action, leaving off in the middle of a cutscene.
A couple hours later, I played a bit of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night before bed, a game that I've watched more than I've actually played. It was late, so a lot of my playtime was spent scumming EXP before a boss. Someday, I shall perhaps actually fight that boss.
May 22nd, 2023
I'm only doing an after work post today because Neocities was down this morning. Today was fine, though. Work was a little relentless, but not bad, and I ate a nice ham sandwich for dinner. I've had a lot of days that are a lot worse.
I did play a lot of games yesterday, with Dragon Quest X Offline being the game to which I dedicated the biggest chunk of time. I wanted to get into the gameplay proper, so I set timers and waded through text 30 minutes at a time, taking notes the whole way, with an end goal of playing for two hours. It felt somewhat hopeless at first, but in the second half of my challenge, I hit some turn based battles! I know this sounds small, and I've taken a pathetically long time to get here, but for me, it feels like a real study victory! I'm quite happy.
Pikmin Bloom took me a fair amount of time in the morning, too, since I had to take a few walks around the block to finish my 30,000 steps for the week. I thought this morning about trying to walk harder during the week to take less pressure off of Sunday, but without that, I just would have sat on my butt all day. I'll keep going along the same path for this week's Pikmin goal, too.
Right before bed, I played Sonic Frontiers for a few minutes, too, but quit because I wasn't having all that much fun. By then, I was really dead tired, so it was more on me than it was the game.
I'm going to try to play a little more Dragon Quext X Offline, and probably something less studious, later on this evening. I'll hopefully be able to make my next update in the morning!
May 8th, 2023
Today was super busy, but it's still May 8th in my time zone, so I haven't missed this post yet! I had to go into the office for work due to internet problems, but it turned out being okay. I'd like to go in every day, to keep work out of my apartment and help with my general nervousness. Plus, I'd get my desk back to myself! I put in the request for that, and think it'll be okay. After work, my mom invited me over for a salmon and spinach dinner, which was amazing, and then I went to Wal-Mart to buy groceries, including the normal grocery of a 10 dollar set of all the Final Destination movies.
In short, even though I thought today would be awful, it was pretty great.
Yesterday, my internet got taken totally offline due to some storms, so I played a bit more stuff than usual. I think I spent the most time on Dragon Quest X Offline, and finally have the items I need to get out of the village in my next couple play sessions. I feel super smart and very studious.
From there, I watched some anime, and since my blu-ray player is my PS4, I ended up turning on Kandagawa Jet Girls, a game so easy that, despite forgetting the controls and briefly going backwards my first race back, I came in a breezy first. This is perhaps the first game to have ever seemed too easy to me, but I might make some more headway on it while it's fresh in my mind.
I wanted to go to bed from there, but ended up playing Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal dead tired due to some apartment noise and got lost in a level that even half asleep seemed too straightforward to be lost in. It was still fun, though.
Tomorrow's post will be pretty mobile game heavy. Either dread or look forward to it, depending on your personal preferences!
May 7th, 2023
I feel a lot better today than yesterday, with yesterday's grocery shopping having taken a wild amount of time and effort. The coleslaw that I make a lot has ramen noodles in it for crunch, and the flavor packet as part of the dressing, so I wanted to find a vegetarian ramen for one of the people who would be eating it. It's suddenly become very rare, though! I found the soy sauce flavor Maruchan at the fifth store I stopped at, but most places had cut back to chicken and beef only. Those flavors are fine, but once I finally found a better variety in the 33 cent brand, I stocked up on the chili and creamy chicken ramen packets, for my own fine dinners. It was quite a surprising problem to come across!
Anyway, game-wise, I wasn't very out of the ordinary yesterday. The main thing I played was Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, which I've discovered is going to make me find all of the collectibles hidden around the stages in order to let me access the last area. Right now, I'm still finding this pretty pleasant, so I don't know how irritating that'll be yet. As you find one type of the collectibles, though, some blueprints, it unlocks map markers to make finding stuff a bit easier. My guess is that this is going to be more time consuming than egregious.
I also did some NPC chatting in Dragon Quest X Offline, a task made challenging by the fact that I was playing after midnight and after a good chunk of time spent petting cats, to which I am allergic. (It was worth it and I'll do it again.) I also found an NPC that went on and on, both about the relative peace outside the village, the monsters outside it, and some controls. It was decent world building, and I'm glad I know how to run now, but he was the only character I talked to. Still, progress is progress and practice is practice!
Today, I'm hoping for a relaxing Sunday, and not a lot seems to be standing in the way.
May 4th, 2023
It's a quick post today, due to some personal failures with organization and remembering I put bread in my toaster! Yesterday, my only game was Dragon Quest X Offline, where I just talked to NPCs as fodder for Japanese grammar and vocab notes. It was heartstopping excitement. I might get out of the first village soon, though.
April 2nd, 2023
Today is my birthday, which is really exciting, right? As far as games go, it's made all of Amy's "birthday girl" stuff in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog very funny to me, though I haven't beaten the game quite yet. It's cute and fun, even though the "action" bits drive me a bit loopy, so I don't mind milking it for all it's worth.
I made some small, but decent headway in Dragon Quest X Offline last night, too. The mission I got involves going into the center of the village and talking to more NPCs, so I was slightly disheartened by that. I can do it, though!
I also played more Disney Tsum Tsum than I should have, chipping away at the coloring page missions. This month's missions are for the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers movie from last year which, given that it was a straight to Disney+ movie from nearly a year ago, feels like a very odd choice. It doesn't matter, though, and could just be an international server event delay sort of thing.
I don't know how much stuff I'll play today. In a little bit here, I'm off to eat Mexican food and watch the Tetris movie in an Apple TV enabled household. It will be a nice, calm, and work free day, though, and that is what matters!
March 27th, 2023
Yesterday, I just played the same stuff I had the day before. I hit a few more chunks of text in Dragon Quest X Offline, though I played late enough that when I found a character talking about how to use the map, I was lazy enough to go "well, I've got the gist of this, good enough."
It was midnight by the time I got to Yakuza 0, so I only played for twenty minutes or so, most of which were cutscenes. It was mercifully easy to find a save point when I needed one, though.
I played Disney Tsum Tsum way less than I expected to, too. I scored another cat, though! The all cat game board becomes closer to reality with every gacha pull.
March 26th, 2023
Thanks to the power of a two day weekend, yesterday felt really good! I got some crafts done, played some games, made a really delicious pot of chili, got some Girl Scout cookies, and went to a Vietnamese restaurant. Today won't be so eventful, though I already went to the Asian grocery store for a ramen and fancy soda run, but I think it will still be good.
In terms of games yesterday, Dragon Quest X Offline is probably what I was most excited about. I'm still crawling along at a snail's pace, but I successfully read the text that three NPCs threw at me, and, thanks to a friend's advice, made it to the first save point! In just 900 hours, I should have this game halfway cleared!
I also tried Yakuza 0 through Game Pass last night, which got off to a very fun start. I was having a lovely time just punching people, but then when I saw the skill tree, not to mention the karaoke, I was won over. I'll probably play a bit more of this today.
Last and admittedly least, I played a few minutes of Disney Tsum Tsum, figuring out that the Sticker Book event has some stages that are excellent for coin scumming. I was kind of disappointed when I managed to clear the level, putting my reign of terror at an end, but it certainly made the event more fun. I think I'm going to hit another one of the high coin stages today.
I'm done posting for now, and off to enjoy a classy lunch of tempura shrimp, potato chips, and applesauce. The shrimp smells really good from across the room.
March 22rd, 2023
Last night, I got stuck working late again last night, and since it was a lot going on before that again, I was too tired to do much afterwards again. I did make frozen food instead of getting takeout, which I feel okay about, but games were pretty much a loss.
I did make it through a couple more text boxes in Dragon Quest X Offline, though, and got to the point where I can wander around a bit more freely! I didn't do anything past that, but tonight, I hope to challenge chatting with NPCs.
March 21st, 2023
I've been feeling so bad lately that, since I can't really make work less stressful, I can at least eat less junky fast food and exercise better. I vowed to myself that I would eat less after work Taco Bell desperation meals and go to the gym at least for small bits of exercise, starting yesterday. I then, of course, had a fairly relentless day and got trapped an hour late. That didn't stop me from making some stir fry for dinner and running over to the gym, but it did make it all really exhausting.
Because of that, I struggled to keep my eyes open when I got to Dragon Quest X Offline. My friend super kindly helped me pick up on what I missed in the first part I played, and because of that, I felt good about what I covered last night! I was so tired, though, that I only made it through two text boxes before I gave up. Hopefully, I can do slightly better tonight.
Since I have to suspend Dragon Quest X Offline due to being a miserably slow reader in Japanese, I've lost access to most of my before bed relaxation games, also on Switch. Because of that, I started My Nintendo Picross: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess last night. I cashed in some My Nintendo points for this before the eShop closed, and I'm really glad I did. Standard Picross that plays nice Zelda music is a good relaxation game, and I'm looking forward to playing more.
March 20th, 2023
I was so worried about work today that I had trouble enjoying yesterday. I can't get out of a pit in terms of tasks due, and we've had our workloads upped, so I feel sick and too stressed to get out of bed or take care of good cooking or decent outfits. Maybe today won't be as bad as I think, but since it's the start of a six day work week with a one day weekend, I got up to post here and try to get off to a good start with my own stuff.
I did start Dragon Quest X Offline yesterday, but the reading bits were even tougher and more extensive than I anticipated, so I haven't hit any gameplay yet. I kind of anticipate that I will by Wednesday or Thursday.
I played Disney Tsum Tsum for a while, too, and gatcha'd another cat. I hit kind of a dead end on the Kingdom Hearts event, requiring me to spend real money on either premium currency or rubies to move forward on time, so I'm not going to try very hard from here. Life is expensive enough.
