What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?

Calm Colors (Switch)

May 6th, 2024

I didn't have a very major gaming day yesterday. I did, as I'd wanted to, play a few levels of Yoshi's Crafted World, though! It was still very cute and nice, and I got the first of five gems I'm supposed to be after. It felt like something of an accomplishment.

I played a little of Calm Colors, too, which was fine. I might dig through my backlog and see what other before-bed possibilities I've got, though.

Right after doing my post here yesterday, I went over to my craft table and finished off Tiny Number Hunt. I actually liked this, even if the "find 1-9 in 30 pictures" concept made for a very short and simple game. It was relaxing, and a lot of the art was really pastel and cute. In the last 10 puzzles, the art style did totally change, which was jarring, but not terrible. I liked the first style better, but that's personal taste.

The control scheme for it was very strange, though! I'd actually gotten this when it came out to play before going to sleep, but the recommended control scheme is popping off the joycons and popping the Switch stand to play vertically. There's touch screen functionality, too, but that felt a little awkward to me. In and of itself, this isn't bad, but needing to get things set up made this a little harder to play on a whim.

Later in the night, I started Yoshi's Crafted World and ended up playing for over an hour longer than I'd intended. It's so cute, and since my family had an SNES when I was in grade school, I always have room for Yoshi. Chucking an egg at a Shyguy gives me great satisfaction. Getting through a few more levels of this is my only gaming goal for today.

Right before bed, I then switched back to Calm Colors as my "come on, let's pass out already" game. It's still a color-by-numbers, from the same developer as Love Colors, no less, but I just don't like it as well. It's fine, though, and I'll stick with it a few more days.

I'm still tired today, so much so that I kept looking at yesterday's post and thinking I'd missed a day somewhere! Last night, I just pieced together a couple of images in Calm Colors before bed, which was lazy and relaxing.

My focus is bad enough that I've already done a lot more gaming than that today, but that'll be a story for tomorrow!

Yesterday ended up being a pretty calm day, but I just didn't have the vibe to play games very much. I cooked, chatted with friends, and built a Gundam, which'll be at the bottom of the post. As far as games went, though, I just played Calm Colors for a few minutes to try and hush my brain up and go to sleep. It was as slow and uneventful as ever, making it perfect to end the day.

Like I mentioned in the last paragraph, I also finished another Gundam yesterday, which I'd been letting drag on in the background for weeks. This one is the Beguir-Beu, one of the Witch From Mercury kits, and I think it came out really impressive. The weapons are really crazy- I love the color scheme on the bayonets, and the wire/stand set up for the attack pods is crazy! When I finished snapping this together, I was really satisfied.

Unfortunately, this kit is a little too weighed down with all of the neat weapons to stand easily, so I'll need to get an action base. That is okay, though.

I want to try to do panel lining on my next kit, so please look forward to this disaster.

Yesterday ended up being a day where a lot was going on! I got lunch with my mom, went to both Dollar Tree and Wal-Mart, and spent a lot of the night online with friends, including a voice chat that went to 3:30 in the morning. It was a really excellent day, pounding headaches in the afternoon aside, and I'd be lucky for today to be half as fun.

That being said, I didn't really play any games, aside from two or three puzzles in Calm Colors before I went to sleep.

Today is off to an okay start. I've already paid bills, and am actually planning to play games with some spirit and dedication today. I have a bit of walking to do to clear my weekly 30,000 step goal in Pikmin Bloom, and I want to get going with some PS4 games so that I can see some screenshots my friend is going to send over. (I had an unexpectedly nasty medical bill this pay period, so it will do me good to play some games in my backlog.) There's some interesting stuff I downloaded over on Game Pass that I might take a quick look at, too. My main goal, though, is to make some real progress in Dragon Quest X Offline, which I should be able to do.

I'd also like to crochet a couple dishcloths, but in terms of this blog, that's neither here nor there.

I worked late again last night, and there's a non-zero chance my car gets trapped in city parking until after midnight tonight. Last night, I played Calm Colors and it did not work to calm me down. I finished the stupid, horrible gingerbread man image, though.

It's Saturday, but I'm feeling mega stressed this morning for no reason at all. Nothing is going on, and in fact, today will be fun, but this is how it goes sometimes.

I felt pretty wobble-brained last night, too, so I played Calm Colors on Switch to get myself better chilled out. It worked enough that I got to sleep, and I cleared a few of the easy and medium images. It was a nice game to turn on again.

My biggest game for yesterday, though, was Sonic at the Olympic Games, which I played through my work breaks and for quite a while at night. I got a little stuck on a hurdles level and shut it off for the night, but since it was well after midnight by then, it's probably better to think of that as "knowing when to quit" than "surrender."

I'm going to go get groceries to make some side dishes for a cookout tonight- coleslaw and beans & (vegan) weenies from me, and then I am going to make efforts to chill!

Thank you for sticking with this blog when I am tired rubbish. I know the casual game stuff is not super exciting, but it keeps me from getting too stressed out when other stuff is a headache.

I'm knocking out a post today before I go grab some Taco Bell for lunch. There won't be much delay, because yesterday, I really played the hell out of Disney Tsum Tsum. I cleared the second, Mulan themed world in the Kingdom Hearts event and was able to gatcha for two "premium" characters. I legitimately don't remember who I got as I type this- maybe one of the Toy Story characters? I also don't extremely care, though, so it's fine. It was a fun time waster for a day when I had to fill out paperwork and run a lot of vinegar through an ailing coffee maker.

Before bed, I also made some more incremental progress in my sleep aid of a Switch game, Calm Colors.

Today, I wanted to relax after a very intense work week, but ended up spending my morning trying to figure out why my internet bill had shot up 20 dollars and then getting my internet shut off for a little bit, whether intentionally or not. It was a headache, but buying a tuna sandwich and getting my copy of Mort the Chicken in the mail helped some.

Game stuff was okay yesterday. I was pressed by all sides, or, if I'm to be less dramatic, was reminded in two seperate situations, to play Sonic Adventure 2 again. It's such a fun game! The controls in the PS3 port I have feel a little slippery, but who cares. It has all the good stuff- bright colors, slowly hunting down chaos emeralds, Sonic inexplicably serving up the diss that Shadow is a "fake hedgehog"- it's a fun game and I enjoy playing it. I don't know that I'll play it again today, but it'll pop up again here tomorrow.

I also played Calm Colors before bed again. One of my frustrations with it has been that its a puzzle-assembly game where every single piece is a very similar triangle, making harder levels a tedious nightmare. Last night, I figured out that it was a color-by-numbers game and I had just somehow shut off the numbers. Smart stuff, right? I felt like a genius.

I'm super low steam today, but I'm hoping that improves once some of the stressful points pass at work. I did play Calm Colors for a few minutes last night, and finished all the origami themed images. (The screenshot is not one of them.) Nothing happened.

Today's post is really small. I was tired last night and decided to finish up a craft project, so I ended up just doing five or so of the easier images in Calm Colors before going to bed. The horrible little gingerbread man puzzle still haunts me, but I'll take care of him later.

My attention span and focus were really poor yesterday, and a decent night's sleep didn't help much. I am worried about my productivity in the work day ahead.

The Nintendo Direct yesterday was fun, though, and I was excited to see that Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games got added to the Switch Online service! I used to really like playing Kirby's Dream Land when I was little, but could never quite beat the game. Last night, I cleared the basic game with no continues and felt slightly hollow. Still, it was very cute, charming, and fun, and the music in it is so memorable! I was really happy to get to play this again.

I then played Calm Colors to try and get myself sleepy, and hated the gingerbread man puzzle I was doing so much that I shut the game off. It did make me sleepy, though, so my goal was achieved.

Somehow, yesterday, I got people to give me food all day, which is pretty much as good as it gets. I am quite thankful. Alas, though, how can today possibly compare?

Game-wise, it was a pretty minor day, though. I played a lot of the easy and medium puzzles on Calm Colors, and felt lucky to have unlocked more at that level. The "hard" puzzles are more engaging, but take so long that when I'm playing half asleep, as this game seems made for, I struggle to finish them. That's a pretty minor complaint to lob at a sleepytime game, though.

This is a pretty dull note to end a month on, but last night, I built a Gundam model instead of really playing games, then did an image in Calm Colors before I went to sleep. I'm still super set on getting the Christmas images over with, hence the candy canes.

Yesterday ended up being unpleasant and too eventful. I got to feeling somewhat better, so I went across the street at work to buy a taco salad, brought it back to my desk, opened it, and totally crashed. My legs were jelly, I couldn't eat, and I had a killer headache, so I went home and got a doctor's appointment. It was a really nice taco salad, too! It's still somewhat upsetting that I couldn't eat more than a couple bites of it. I got some advice, a prescription, and a note to take today off, too, which was nice, because I still feel somewhat zombie-ish.

In my spaciness and frustration, though, I impulse bought an XBox Series S, which, in the cold light of day, was a great and super cool move on my part. I got it all set up and nabbed Game Pass, but was way too out of it to do anything with it last night. Even today, I'm not sure if I'll play anything or not, but it runs Netflix super smoothly and'll be there when I'm confident in the power of my limbs once again.

Even Disney Tsum Tsum was way too much for me yesterday, so I played a couple images on Calm Colors and went to sleep hard.

For today, my games might not be any better, but resting, staying hydrated, and making sure I can eat both lunch and dinner are more important than anything. I have a pot pie in the over, so my hopes are high!

January 21st, 2023

Everything felt like a major challenge last night, so I did not play games hard. I did download a sub-$10 indie game I'd been wanting on PS4, though, called Salamander County Public Television. It's a minigame collection glued together by a story about working at a public television station in a town where all of the residents have disappeared, and since (I am pretty sure) it's made entirely of stock assets, it has a pretty unique look and feel. I didn't play too much of it last night, but I thought it was funny and enjoyed figuring out how the weird minigame physics worked. If I don't play more of this today, I will Sunday.

I also did a couple more images in Calm Colors, with a weird, exhausted attitude of "well, I'm not thrilled about the Christmas set of images, but I'm gonna have to do 'em eventually, huh?" I don't even hate Christmas, I was just rude last night.

January 19th, 2023

Tonight, I am making a super late post, over a lovely dinner of salad and frozen chicken strips! Nothing is wrong today, I just couldn't focus this morning and didn't want to rush through something that I enjoy doing to get a post done before work.

Pretty directly after work last night, I huddled down to finish up Cube Escape: Arles which I ended up being able to clear without the walkthrough that my coworker texted me. I do have an index card of scrawled puzzle notes to show for my efforts, but that's how point and click games go. This was the first of the Cube Escape games that really clicked for me. I felt like the game length was good, the puzzles were hard in a satisfyingly solvable way, and the Van Gogh stuff was a neat twist on the series themes and motifs. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

After that, I wanted to keep playing games rather than do much else, so I went back to Wild Arms, which I just kind of forgot about! I cleared the dungeon I'd been in, the Maze of Death, super quickly, and went back outside for a ship-bound boss battle and some plot points. NPCs are very clearly telling me where to go next, so I guess I'll pay attention to their little text boxes and head north!

From there, I crocheted and watched Youtube for a little bit before heading to bed and doing another puzzle in Calm Colors to knock me out. It is weird to discuss how I feel about this as a game, because there's hardly anything to it, but it genuinely is relaxing.

January 17th, 2023

This'll be a quick post, since I feel down about getting back to work today, with all the non-voluntary late work I've been getting, and had trouble getting out of bed.

Yesterday there was a super sudden tornado warning, complete with sirens going off outside and my phone sending alerts inside. I don't have a basement, and there was no watch beforehand to get to one, like usual, so I kind of huddled away from a window and played StrikeForce Kitty for an hour to distract myself without actually having to think. It was actually great EXP gathering progress, too.

The tornado stuff turned out to be a dud, but still kind of blew my plans for the day. Before bed, then, I played Pokemon Violet for a while, doing some trainer battles and Pokemon catching along one of the routes.

Then, from there, I put together a few easy puzzles in Calm Colors and went to sleep.

January 16th, 2023

Today, I've regained some energy, which is a super nice feeling on a day off. There's thunder outside, though, which is very strange for January! I thought I'd misheard, but no. There's just some classic midwestern January thunderstorms today.

I still wasn't very energetic or thoughtful yesterday, so I tackled one of the bigger images in Calm Colors and nothing else, draggin' those shapes across the screen. It actually did help me relax and get to sleep well, which is nice, but it was slightly tedious, too. Zooming in on the image, which is almost required, as tiny as the shapes got in this case, made it hard to see everything at once, which is kind of frustrating in a place-the-pieces puzzle game. I tended to keep it zoomed out, which meant that for the smaller pieces, I just kind of wooshed them around the screen until they invisibly snapped into place. It's not a deal breaker for me, and thinking about it this morning, I'm not sure how the developers could have better balanced this issue.

Today, I'm hoping to play something a little more involved, but don't know what yet. If I don't end up doing so, that's fine, too.

January 15th, 2023

I lived yesterday in a somewhat fluff brained haze, crocheting, doodling, and terrorizing my online friends. It wasn't a bad day, but it wasn't great for games, either.

I kind of wanted to play a music game last night, but my neighbors were super loud, so I couldn't hear my own tv well enough to play effectively. Instead, I ended up digging through my ultra cheap Nintendo Switch impulse buys until I found Calm Colors, a simple little game that's somewhere between tanagrams and color-by-number. I turned all the hints and highlight features off to make it more of a game, and less of a meditation style app, and it wasn't so bad. Last night, I was mostly doing the easy images, as my powers of advanced comprehension were shot. Today, though, I might try one of the more complicated ones, just out of curiosity as to how long it takes to snap together.
