I'm doing a quick before work post today. I woke up and couldn't breathe, so I had to take my inhaler and am having trouble sitting still, which is great with eight and a half hours or more at my desk ahead. Oh, well.

I kept after getting all of the socials cleared in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight last night. Today's screenshot shows easy mode because I was using it to play with some of the challenge modifiers. Getting the trophy for "note speed fluctuates" and "note paths waver" was disorienting, but it was an interesting way to play!

I wanted to go to bed after playing that for a while, but felt too unsettled to sleep and played a couple rounds of Sonic Runners Adventure. I still kind of hate this game, and didn't even bother grabbing a screenshot without my phone's volume controls visible. It did the job and got me tired enough to pass out, though, so it has its uses.

September 29th, 2022

I feel like I am not doing great this week. I feel so tired and super stressed out during work, even though nothing that bad is going on. Last night, I could have gotten a call that forced a considerable amount of overtime with no credit, and even though it never came through, the pressure of waiting felt so extreme that I got a stress headache, ate a Totino's Party Pizza from Dollar General, and did a lot of wall staring. I basically like my job, too, I don't know what my problem is.

Before bed, though, I forced myself to play a few songs in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, which netted me more progress than I expected. I'm optimistic about my ability to clear this game, and wondering if I might be able to score the Platinum Trophy for it, too.

Lunch break post today! I got an hour forced overtime last night, which isn't even bad, but has somehow left me bereft of pep even 16 hours later. I did play Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight a lot again before bed. This may be an awfully hot take, but I'm gonna come out and say it- video games are a little more fun than work.

I'm posting before work again, after successfully forcing myself on another morning walk. Last night, I played Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight quite a bit, and think I have a gameplan to clear all the socials. It'll be a little grindy for a couple of them, but the music game is really fun, so I'm not disappointed about that at all. I might actually get this game cleared pretty soon.

I am up and going with some dread of my workweek today, but I at least successfully forced myself to take a morning walk. Since starting with this for the day, though, I accidentally hit a wrong key and messed up my web editor- the HTML codes are no longer color coded, and it's putting all of my conjunctions in purple, with some bits of text showing as yellow instead of white for a reason I can't quite figure out. Since I don't know what keys I hit, I can't fix it. It's not a cool start to a Monday. (Edit: This was fixed when I went to paste this entry into the September archive page.)

Games-wise, though, I started Dead or Alive: Dimensions last night, another game stolen from my old house. I played through a bit of Chronicle mode, and it was really fun. It's a bit lame that I had to play as Kasumi, since I think she's one of the less interesting characters, but that's no big deal. It works better than I'd expect an early 3DS fighter would, as far as I can tell.

September 25th, 2022

Yesterday wasn't bad, but it was busy. At the end of the day, I popped my copy of SNK Arcade Classics, Vol 1 for Wii in to test a cheapie arcade style controller I'd grabbed off my old living room's floor. I have the same disc for both PSP and Wii because I'm a dork. The Wii version loads a lot faster, but the PSP one controls better, I think. They're both fine, though, at least by my standards.

Since Shock Troopers has "stop and aim" 360 shooting, I thought it would be a good test of the controller's joystick. It is not a great joystick, and I still don't love the control scheme, so I intended to play for a few minutes and quit. My apartment building got a little noisy, though, so I ended up just playing through to the end. It's not my favorite Neo Geo game I've ever played, but it's fine. I ran the whole game on the single character mode as Milky, and she had plenty of personality for such a little sprite, and I thought the atmosphere and tension worked really nicely in the level where the enemy had taken over civilian territory. My feelings about it aren't very strong, though, and I probably won't revisit it that often.

On a website related note, I got my October placeholder links set up this morning. I can't believe September is so close to over! It feels like it went by so fast.

September 24th, 2022

I have to be helpful again today, so I am up early on a Saturday. I need to drive 4 hours total today, and usually sleep later because my work shift is later, so I tried to go to bed early and get an ok amount of sleep. I totally failed. Maybe an overpriced fast food breakfast will help.

Last night, I only played games for a few minutes to go to bed earlier, and I played Sonic Adventure. I cleared Twinkle Park in Sonic's story in my efforts to catch my PS3 file up to where I was on PC. I'd avoided playing for a while since I knew I was at that spot. The amusement park theme is cute, but it's not fun to play, the bumper car track makes my stomach drop, and the music from the boat ride in the last part of the level really bothers me playing over the standard stage music. Now that I'm past this, I'll probably go back to this game more often.

My work lunch was two hours late today, so I was too hungry to waste any time posting during it. I'm doing this post during a classy 9:00pm store brand lunchables dinner. It was an Aldi organic one, though, the ham part of it was fantastic.

My first game last night was Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, doing a minimal, but effective, three songs and unlocking a social event. It was the last one for Aegis, and thank god the card was easy to find! The first person card finding bonus game is way too motion sickness inducing.

After that, it was more Balan Wonderworld before bed. I'm still too lazy to really write about this, but hey, maybe someday! I beat the first boss and found enough of the Balan Statues to unlock worlds two and three

It's a quick lunch break post for today. I was wiped out and tired last night, so I did missions in King of Fighters: Maximum Impact for about 10 or 15 minutes before going to bed. I still didn't sleep well, but today is slightly better.

Yesterday, I played a lot of games, but for mysterious reasons- really, it wasn't even a high caffeine day for me yesterday!- I could only sleep a couple hours last night. I'm doing a quick lunch break post as a result, in case I'm too knocked out to do anything decent tonight.

First off the bat for me last night was Cyberpunk 2077 again, which I don't think I'm going to keep up with for now. I played the first 4-5 hours and don't even think it's bad, really- it just feels kind of lifeless and devoid of joy to me. That's really hard to quantify concretely, and again, I don't think it's a problem with the game! I'll probably go back to it, too. It is just not what I'm looking for at the moment.

With that in mind, I grabbed one of my other widely panned games off of my shelf, Balan Wonderworld. It was, in fact, what I was looking for at the moment. I will write more about this in coming days, so I don't feel bad blowing it off today.

I also played Shock Troopers, a Neo Geo arcade game, on the SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 disc I've got for my PSP while I waited for updates to download over on my Switch. I'd like to clear this in the next few days. The aiming controls feel slightly clunky to me, but I really like how much personality the sprites have within the stage, and I feel powerful when I am the peppy girl shooting a tank until it explodes. I'll probably say more about this later, too.

September 20th, 2022

I'm doing a quick post before work today. I got Cyberpunk 2077 up and running last night, and played the first couple hours of it with a cinnamon cookie wax melt burning while eating generic Frosted Mini Wheats straight out of the box. It seems fine so far- not a lot more exciting than fine, but I only did prologue and tutorial stuff so far. I even got to see a couple of neat glitches last night, too, where the textures failed to load while approaching signs and billboards. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good shot of them to share here, but I'll keep trying now that it gave me "Photo Mode."

Overall, though, I was kind of happy that, no matter how they accomplished it, this is a first person game that doesn't make me really motion sick. I've had trouble getting sick from 3D games since the N64, and first person is usually really difficult for me. The Half-Life games don't bother me, and that's about it. This seemed fine so far, though, which is nice.

Last night, I got it in my head that it was time to take my used copy of Cyberpunk 2077 off the shelf and see how long it took me to hit a game breaking glitch.

After a couple hours of downloads and patches, I picked up my Switch for Pokemon Puzzle League and made some great progress in puzzle mode.

I didn't play King of Fighters: Maximum Impact last night and was punished for my hubris.

My biggest game activity yesterday was to try Metal Gear Solid on my Playstation Classic. The bad choice of system is a crucial part of this story. I played the first half hour and got fairly into it, but during the first chunk of exposition, after I got on the elevator without getting killed, I realized that the Playstation Classic's screen goes to sleep fairly quickly, which in this case, caused me to miss some of the "go here or go there" instructions from the commander! Why would Sony have made a system with a famous chatty game built in that automatically dims the screen if the game gets chatty? It seems like such a dumb choice.

Last night, I calmly saved my game, put the Playstation Classic up on a shelf, and sent a wall of text complaining about it to a friend. Today, I'm trying to figure out if I might just be able to get through it by idly tapping a shoulder button during cutscenes, if there's a setting that I missed, or something like that. I shouldn't have been shocked that a famously dumb mini console has more dumb features than I realized, but still, it sucks.

Once I was done being irritated about that, I turned on Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards to see that a couple play sessions worth of progress had been wiped out. Nintendo Switch Online had not done that to me before, and I was not thrilled. It's not a chore to replay levels in a Kirby game, but I was in no mood for it then.

Ultimately, I ended up playing a few puzzle mode levels in Pokemon Puzzle League. I was too annoyed to really enjoy it, and it's my least favorite mode of the game to boot, but my luck will be better today.

Well... I did start things off by ordering a hot drink at Starbucks and getting an iced one, but scooping the ice out, dumping it into another cup, and microwaving it took care of that. Hopefully at least any video game related activities I choose to undertake will go better, anyway!

Last night, with the weekend looming ahead, I was able to pep up enough to get my PS2 plugged in and running. This is not a chore, since I just swap the cords over from my PS1, but I have, in fact, been that lazy. With that done, I popped in King of Fighters: Maximum Impact, which I'm sure is the main reason people would be booting up PS2s in 2022.

I actually kind of like these weird efforts to bring the King of Fighters series into 3D. Playing last night, I do have to admit that it feels easier to go out of alignment with your opponent in this than it does in other 3D fighters, and the character faces have a really strange, plastic-y look to them, especially on the select screen. I also wouldn't trade 2D KOF games for these by any stretch of the imagination. They're fun, though. I like Falcoon's "wow, that's a bit much" approach for the series, and the character moves carry over well enough from 2D that it feels pretty natural to pick up and play.

When I originally got KOF: Maximum Impact, it was dirt cheap at a Game Stop- my game case even still has the $5.99 price tag on it. I'd just gotten done with unlocking everything in its direct sequel, though, King of Fighters 2006, so I didn't mess with it too much back then. Now that I've dragged my old copy to my apartment, it's a much better time to tackle it. Last night, I did the first set of levels in mission mode, and I at least want to give story mode a small go today.

It's so hard to get "screenshots" of a fast moving PS2 game, though! Oh, well! I'll give it my best.

Today, I'm doing a quick lunch break post while I microwave some frozen kung-pao broccoli from Aldi for lunch!

I picked Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney back up last night. I'd been feeling kind of anxious about being able to focus on it without a lot of free time or energy, so I set it aside for months. I still don't feel great about all that, but want to play games I enjoy and just went for it. My save file was right at the start of the third trial, though, so I just decided to roll with it. So far, so good!

I played Sonic Runners Adventure for a few more minutes, too. This game is miserable and I should probably delete it off my phone. Look forward to another update on it soon!

September 15th, 2022

Last night was still pretty bad. I got excited about fighting games, but didn't think I could stay upright long enough to play any of the PS2 fighters I brought back over the weekend. Instead, I grabbed the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection for Switch, thought about what I wanted to play, and chose Street Fighter Alpha. It wasn't right, though! There weren't enough characters, the UI was wrong, and I felt really thrown off.

Then, after a while, I realized I'd been thinking of Street Fighter Alpha 3 the whole time. I booted it up, was pleased, played a couple stages, and promptly dozed off, only waking up when my hands, still gripped to the Switch, fell asleep.

I am getting more than enough sleep. I am tired of being so sleepy all the time.

September 14th, 2022

My current tiredness is impossible to defeat, but I got another game cleared last night! Macbat 64 puts me halfway to my goal of 10 games cleared, but even though I'm happy about the progress, I wish the game had been longer! Macbat 64 was really weird, cute, and charming, and I wish it had at least a few more levels to explore. Last night, I cleared all the bonus material alongside the main game in, again, less than an hour. The same developer did two Toree games, though, so maybe more Macbat is ahead, too.

Aside from that, I also got the SD card I ordered in, letting me set up cheats and screenshots for my Retron 5. I played some more of Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose with infinite lives on, mostly because I'm too lazy to save state scum upon my failures. It was fun, and I was very pleased with how easy the screenshot feature was to use. I'll have to play around with the NES side of this system, too.

Lastly, I played a little more of Sonic Runners Adventure before bed. I don't actually like this game, but it's on my phone, so I keep playing it. Maybe someday I shall clear it and be free of this curse.

I was looking for a quick and easy victory last night, so I started up Macbat 64, which I'd gotten in one of my itch.io bundles. I'd heard it was super short when the Switch port came out, so it seemed like an easy clear, but once I got into it, I was disappointed that it was such a tiny game! A combat/enemy free N64 style platformer is an interesting idea, and I thought it was cute, with funny level gimmicks. The camera was really nasty in parts, though, spinning around for no reason in the later levels in particular.

The main game was finished for me in less than an hour, but I'll do the post-game bonus material, too, before I call it cleared.

September 12th, 2022

It's still no good! I wanted to play games for hours after everything was settled last night, but felt too tired and stressed to decide on anything. Now that it's a work day again, I feel kind of depressed that I blew my chance to relax so badly.

Using some old games I had laying around and some I brought back with me on Saturday, though, I finally set up and tested the Retron 5 I bought a while back. I ended up picking two Tiny Toon Adventures games, since I really liked it as a kid, the Konami games for it were pretty decent, and I had a couple of games for the license on hand. I need an SD card to play with the cheats and screenshot functions, and Best Buy was out of them last night, so I only played these a few minutes each.

My first victim was Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose for the SNES,which, had everything worked out of the box, I would have blown through with infinite lives enabled, laughing maniacally as I lay waste to the entirety of Acme Acres. Instead, I played the first level, pleasantly surprised that this is as good as I remembered it being, and put it aside for the next game. I'll pick this back up once I get the SD card for sure, but I'm not sure if I'll actually use cheats or not.

After that, I bounced to Tiny Toon Adventures: Acme All Stars for the Sega Genesis, which I did not click with last night. I bought this at a Disc Replay when I was in grad school, so I was not nearly as familiar with it, and it isn't really my cup of tea. It might still be fine, but I don't feel well qualified to talk about team sports games. The bowling isn't bad, but sitting through the three AI players to get back to my own frame was super tedious. I shut it off pretty quickly.

Lastly, I played a few more levels of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards before bed, and went to sleep early. It's still fun, but I'm still having trouble sleeping a normal amount, so it's hard to make progress.

September 11th, 2022

I'm still kind of spent today, but grabbed a lot of my old games from my family's old house yesterday, including my dear old friend The Bouncer! I don't know when that's going to become a problem, but I apologize in advance. Mostly I nabbed PS2 games, but I also tossed two SNES games, and one NES and PS1 game each in my oversized purse, with most of the overall pile being fighters. I was ready to add KOF: Maximum Impact and King of Fighters 2006 to my list of wanted games as re-buys, so I am happy.

I also found and stole my mom's old Selectavision player, a machine that plays movies with a stylus on grooves, like a vinyl record. It needs a new belt, from my tests last night, but I might post about it a little when I get it fixed.

Game playing wise, I wussed out and only played one more level of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It wasn't for lack of enjoyment, but I got up way earlier than normal, drove a lot, and was doing a lot of digging, lifting, and dumpster tossing yesterday.

I also cleared my weekly challenge in Pikmin Bloom, getting 20,000 steps in for the week. I forgot my phone on a couple of walks this week, so it took longer than it should have.

Here's another quick post on a week that won't let up. I played Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards on Nintendo Switch Online for a few minutes last night. I never beat it back when it came out, so it's a good candidate for completion now. It's very cute, too.

Now for two interstate drives in the rain in one day, my absolute favorite. Hopefully McDonalds will give me a pointlessly big coffee fast on my way out of town.

I'm still at low power. I played Sonic Runners Adventure for about half an hour before bed, feeling put off by the unique way that it is somehow simultaneously too easy and too hard. Do endless traps and projectiles requiring pinpoint precision count for anything if you can spend easy-to-earn rings to immediately revive?

Before I set my "beat ten games" to buy the next one goal, though, I had put in three pre-orders- for the 3rd NIS Classics set, an imported physical copy of Idol Manager, and a Genesis Mini 2. Idol Manager came yesterday, and I'm so tempted to try it! I have to be up early for a busy weekend tomorrow, though, so it's probably a bad idea.

It's another late post today. My focus and energy are just awful the past few days. Last night was also another night where I got myself to play games for a few minutes to cheer up before bed, opting for a few rounds of Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight. It's really nice to have a game on tap where I can make scattershot progress by just picking songs and going for it. I even unlocked another social event, which I hadn't even set as a goal for myself! It's good to make progress despite myself.

I'm still feeling kind of foggy-brained and tired, so tonight's post is way too late. I was worried about what to play again last night, too, so to try to push past that, I got out the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for Switch. It's a really cool complilation, so there's always something to mess with on it.

My first idea was that it was finally time to beat Athena, which didn't happen because, despite the fact that it's charming, pastel, and cute, I always forget that I absolutely hate playing it because it is a barely functional game. Please note that I am so sure another attempt'll be made I marked today's new page specifically for the NES/Famicom version. Despite my many failures and frustrations with the arcade version of this game on PSP, I will eventually wonder if I was just trying to play the wrong version and then try the arcade version again. This loop shall never end.

After I gave up on Athena, though, I tried Beast Busters, and hoo boy, is that a hell of a game! The zombies had guns, the owls had zombies, and my player character was named Johnny Justice. All of it was great, and I am smiling just typing about it. In fact, I shut it off in stage two because I felt like I'd need to really be awake to appreciate how dumb it was.

All that being said, I am not sure it works well on Switch. The Joycon controls were pretty terrible proxies for the arcade light gun, and the total lack of visual or aural feedback when I took a hit was a little frustrating. I also don't care because devil owls were bringing football zombies to kill and eat a man named Johnny Justice, and that's the magic of video games.

Today'll be a quick lunch break post. I was feeling kind of uneasy about what to play last night, even though there's no reason to worry much about video games, so I ended up not doing much interesting at all.

For longer than I intended to, I played Sonic Runners Adventure on my phone. The screenshot here is from my first round of play, in the world 2 flying levels, but I ended up picking it back up when I couldn't decide what else to do and doing some of world 3, too. I feel like I'll clear this game within another couple of play sessions, but don't feel super enthusiastic about that at the moment.

After that, I played My Sims more, getting my town up to 3 out of 5 stars by the end of the play sessions. It's getting a little tedious, and I'm starting to just ignore the tourists I pass on the road, but in turn, it's helping me sleep better after playing. This game is truly a double edged sword.

September 5th, 2022

I had a low maintenance game day yesterday, kicking off with my finishing Loud, putting me at 4 out of 10 games cleared for my completely arbitrary goal to hit before buying a new game. I realize that I am mostly clearing short indie games so far, but I haven't been good at beating even short games in the past. My focus has been pretty bad. Even if this is a small, rubbish goal that I'm scumming my way through, I feel good about what I've been able to do here.

As for Loud, it was a fun game. The story was a little too minimalistic, maybe, and I did have some problems with the controls. The guitar-driven soundtrack was a nice change of pace, though, and the outfits unlocked through the game were both cute and more dramatic than simple pallette swaps. Even if I don't do it right away, I'll leave this on my Switch in case I decide to go back for better scores and higher difficulties later.

I played My Sims a little more, too. I think I made some progress, and I got the fisherman to take one out of three of my fish. It seems like recording fish from the wrong body of water might be gated off until my town's star level goes up, but I don't really care enough to be mad about it.

September 4th, 2022

Today is Sunday, the central day of a three-day weekend, and I don't have to do anything today! I didn't really have to do anything yesterday, either, but I built a really big shelf. It was an accomplishment.

Game-wise, I picked up Loud, an indie rhythm game I'd downloaded to my Switch right when it had a new release discount, while I was making dinner. It's pretty cute, using the story of a high school girl dreaming of being a rockstar as she moves up in her local scene to move things forward, but the controls are really bothersome

The key issue I'm having is that, if you hit a button unrelated to what's on screen, rather than just missing your timing, the game counts it as a miss, which is brutal, but fine. On a different system, I'm not sure this would be an issue. It's giving me trouble here, though, for two reasons. First, my download of it/my Switch/the gremlins in my system can't read a held note on the D-pad bottom arrow, which means getting a prompt for that on screen can end a stage if I don't react fast enough. It marks the hold note as "good" at first press, so if I remember that spot is broken for me and back off right away, I'm fine. If I don't remember, though, the "any wrong button is a miss" rule means that after that initial "good," holding the down arrow for a note that has already been registered as clear results in an instant, quick string of misses, racking up the strike meter at the top and resulting in a game over. The D-Pad bottom arrow doesn't give me issues in any other games, so I'm not sure what's up here.

Edit: As of about 10 hours later, the D-pad note holding glitch I was running into is no longer occurring. I'm adding this note because I don't want a bug that might have been a total fluke to put people off of this game!

Second, with the buttons on the Switch being so tiny, the missed note scoring means that you can lose a combo just by your thumbs being too big. This one was only an issue for me once or twice, again on the D-pad, but I have relatively small hands and am using Joycons bigger than the standard. It was irritating when it happened to me, but I think it has the potential to be a bigger problem for other players.

At any rate, I don't dislike this overall. I like the music, it's fun to see how an indie music game approaches both the genre and storytelling, and it is hard for me to be totally disappointed with a cheap game where I'm unlocking new outfits. I think I probably got about halfway through while making a pot of soup last night, so one of my goals for today is to finish it before bed.

Later on in the night, after watching a bad movie and doing some crafts, I played some more Sonic Adventure on my PS3. I was working on Amy's levels tonight, and her mouth movements are egregiously mismatched to what she actually says in the English dub! She seemed to have more glitches than the other characters, too. Her skirt turned totally inside out while she was petting a Chao; it was a really odd visual! Still, this game is pretty and fun, and I like it. The glitchiness was way more amusing than bothersome.

Lastly, I played My Sims a little before bed again. I caught some fish, but I can't figure out how to get them to become selectable items to hand them off to the fisherman who wants them for his "fish book." Since this is obviously a game made for kids, it feels like a small personal failing.

With all that said, though, I'm off to enjoy a nothing day! Truly, 'tis glorious.

Yesterday, I got off work without hassle ahead of a three-day weekend, putting me in a good mood to start playing games late and then stay up much longer than I should have.

First up, I wanted to play with the character creator in PriPara: All Idol Perfect Stage, a port of the PriPara arcade game and loading time simulator that, despite its inability to efficiently render a pair of pants, is a mainstay in my gaming library. I made my new idol unit, dressed them up, and then played some of the songs I like in it before popping the game back in the Ace Attorney Trilogy box. (I moved back to the US three years ago, I should really get on ordering some replacement Switch game cases.) It wasn't a long play session, nor did this fulfill any game completion goals, but who cares? It's shiny.

I kept going with music games after that, turning Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight back on. I got three social events unlocked last night, which I felt pretty good about, and had enough fun that I lost track of time playing. As I near the end of this game, I'm glad I have two more games in the series waiting in the wings for me.

Since I hit a point where I beat a song, looked at the time, and thought, "wow, it's later than I thought, I should go to bed," I naturally picked up my DS for a few minutes of My Sims. I am starting to sincerely doubt that there is a lot to this game, but I'm also not sure I care. Despite my disappointment that I likely will not be able to make a bacon couch like I could on the Wii, it is pleasant.

Today is another quick lunch break post. I played My Sims for a while before bedtime and felt like I was making progress without actually doing much. The raquetball minigame, which I got right as I turned the game on, feels like the controls are somewhat busted, but the lei making minigame worked fine. Mostly, though, my feeling is just that this a supremely cute and laid back game. There's no big goals aside from "make the town good," and while that's simple, it's fine for something I'm playing while I'm sleepy, too. Personally, I want to get a lot of houseplants for my sim, too, and make her fiction mirror my reality.

This is a quick post during lunch break, due to intense sleepiness for the time of day. Last night, I did another playthrough in TV Animation X: Unmei no Sentaku, clearing the game as Fuma. Plot and available character-wise, I understand why each playthrough only has you up against five opponents, but it makes each playthrough seem so short! I'm going to try to unlock everything in the gallery, though, which'll help this game's longevity a bit.

I also picked up My Sims as a new before bed game. I know I'll write more about this later, so I don't mind being brief for now. It's cute and pleasant.
