What Video Game Did I Play Yesterday?
October 2023
October 31st, 2023
Happy Halloween! I had trouble getting out of bed again, so this is an ultra quick post. I played Dragon Warrior II for about 15 minutes last night before falling asleep. It was a rip-roarin' time.
October 30th, 2023
I didn't want to get out of bed this morning in the slightest, so I'm posting tonight as I bake an apple spice cake for a work potluck tomorrow. It smells so good, but I'm not really hungry! Oh, well, I'll eat dinner after this post either way.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to play last night, so I went through my Japanese PS1 games and ended up getting out Simple 1500 Series: The Dungeon RPG. I hadn't really played this before, but it seems to be a decent enough basic roguelike. Plus, it lets you save between floors, which is a fantastic feature! I didn't expect a ton, but this was neat, and I'll probably play it again soon.
October 29th, 2023
I was zoned out yesterday, so I ended up sitting around and watching TV, reading manga, and crocheting dishcloths. It was really pleasant, but the only thing I ended up playing was a couple levels of Splatterhouse 2. I'd never played it before, but it felt pretty deliberate for a beat-'em-up, at least in the early going, which was interesting. I'll probably try it again, but I don't know that I will today.
October 28th, 2023
Yesterday, I didn't play many games because I was up late watching Vincent Price chew up the scenery in a movie on TCM. Back in January, I wanted to watch 100 movies this year, and as of last night, I'm at either 74 or 75, depending on how nice I want to be to myself about watching one movie twice. A little over two months to hit 25 movies isn't bad at all, so I still think I'll make it. I really lost a lot of time feeling crummy during the summer, though, making it harder for myself now.
After the movie last night, I played a few levels of Sonic Generations, hitting some Dreamcast era areas. The Adventure games were my first experience with Sonic games, since I'd never had a Genesis or Saturn as a kid, so seeing the City Escape and Speed Highway levels were way more nostalgic for me than the Green Hill Zone type stuff. I maybe think that some of the setpiece recreation is a little lazy, being able to come at it from an angle I recognize better, but since the whole game seems to be nostalgia triggers, that might be a sentiment that expects too much.
This weekend, there's nothing that I have to accomplish, which is a good feeling. I don't know what I'll play yet, either, so I'll see how it all goes!
October 27th, 2023
I'm doing a quick post during my last work break today, as I look forward to a weekend filled with homemade potato dishes. I have a few ideas so far, and it should all be pretty easy stuff. The potatoes will be instrumental in getting me through the first "wintery mix" of the season.
Last night, I just played Monster Sanctuary some more, and started to play with how the skill trees can differentiate monsters even from others of their species. I started racking up some five star battles as I explored, too, which made me feel powerful.
October 26th, 2023
Today, I'm still zoned out, but for a much dumber reason than normal. I had a blood test early this morning, which was fine, but I couldn't sleep because my brain decided it was time to pick apart the logic of the evil plot at the part of Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. At 3am, I was actively angry that Hollywood would take us for such fools that we wouldn't question how time zones played into the televised part of the evil. Now that I'm awake, I'm more accepting of the fact that black sheep horror sequels that heavily feature druid magic don't have to adhere to real world logic, but I still thought about it a lot today.
Anyway, last night I limited myself to 20 minutes of Monster Sanctuary because I thought I was gonna go to bed early and get a good night's sleep. It's still pleasant, and I have a little cat friend, so I'm going to keep going.
October 25th, 2023
I'm still bereft of pep, but I tried Monster Sanctuary on Game Pass last night and was reasonably interested in the start of it. Turn-based battling and platforming are an interesting combo, so I'll probably play it again.
October 24th, 2023
My energy is super low today, but I started playing Dragon Warrior II last night. I'll talk more in detail about it later for sure.
October 23rd, 2023
I had work early today, so I'm doing a lunch break post today. Yesterday wasn't a big games day, though. I did crafts and watched a movie, and made some broccoli cheese soup from scratch. I felt super accomplished, at least on the soup side of things!
As far as games do go, I played another couple of songs in Britney's Dance Beat before bed, and that was it. The garish yellows of this game strike me as strange, but it's an aesthetic for sure.
October 22nd, 2023
Yesterday, I did end up playing a decent amount of games. Before I'd even posted here, I went and got the last gem in Super Kiwi 64, since leaving the game at 98% was really bothering me. I really enjoyed this game, so it wasn't much hassle to call it completely done, and it was a nice sense of accomplishment, too.
I went to do a little more of Sonic Generations in the afternoon, too, but just ended up doing a couple of challenge levels and the first boss. The challenge levels, where you go back to complete special goals in levels you've already cleared, do feel like transparent padding, but they're fun enough that I don't dislike that yet. The Amy Rose "pop Sonic sky high with a hammer" level I played was kind of a delight.
Lastly, I got a Miyoo Mini+ on a pretty big sale recently, and it came last Monday. I'd been a little too tired to play with it during the week, but I browsed the ROMs on it in slight disbelief that Amazon was sellling something so wildly outside of copyright law and set it aside. Last night, though, I was talking to a friend about Dragon Quest and, though I have the Switch port of Dragon Quest II, I hated the bad scrolling in the Switch version of DQI so much that I decided to play the old Game Boy port instead.
Anyway, I turned the machine on intending to play Dragon Quest and then ended up playing the Game Boy Advance version of Britney's Dance Beat, which I'm sure is normal. I actually don't have any interest in piling on this game- it's more competent than I expected for a GBA rhythm game, and the motion captured digitized sprites are kind of impressive. It is mildly deranged to make the songs full length when they're just midis with a single line of vocals popping in every so often, but I felt like it was responsive and fair about registering my button presses. I played a little last night, but I'll probably see this game through. It's not great, but it is interesting.
I don't know what I'm going to do today, but my big goal is to defeat my sleepiness and cook a real dinner with some vegetables.
October 21st, 2023
This morning, I've been trying to be productive. Over the last couple weeks, I got a new medication I'm trying to adjust to, and it's making me really, really tired. After nine or ten hours sleep, I still don't want to move the next day, so it's been hard to eat decent food. Because of that, I went to the grocery store this morning and tried to pick up a good variety of freezer meals, to avoid last week's dreaded "hot dog week." I don't think the frozen food is truly any better for me than the hot dogs were, but it's at least less monotonous for zero effort.
Games-wise, I got up to 49 gems in Super Kiwi 64 last night, which was lovely in that I got to witness a top level video game sunset, pictured below. It's certainly an easier than average game, but I like the atmosphere and aesthetics of it so well! These colors are wonderful.
I have definitely already done some game stuff today, but I want to do some practical chores and crafts stuff today, too. Today is going to be a nice Saturday, even if it puts up a fight.
October 20th, 2023
I went to a craft store instead of posting before work today, so I'm doing a quick post during break. I just played a couple more levels of Super Kiwi 64 before bed, though, which was nice and relaxing. It's a super short game, so I feel like I'm hitting my stride with it just as I get into the second half! That's okay, though. I'm enjoying my time with it. It's fun to drill Kiwi's beak into a wall and bounce up the side of an entire tower. Going up the sides of structures that way feels powerful, like I'm cheating somehow. It is a delight.
October 19th, 2023
Last night, I just kept going with the games I'd been playing the night before. I tackled two more levels of Sonic Generations, which I'm having a lot of fun with so far. I think the two gameplay styles work decently well together, and it really does have a good sense of speed. I'm surprised there hasn't been a boss fight yet, though!
With Super Kiwi 64, I'm not so sure how I feel about it yet. The gameplay feels good, but the camera is driving me crazy. It's a point of N64 accuracy I'm not sure needs to be recreated. It's still enjoyable, though.
October 18th, 2023
I sat down to finish A Castle Full of Cats last night, but the last room was only an item room, not a hidden object room, meaning I'd basically already finished. I did fight the final boss again, which ended up being worth it, with some cute extra details for having gotten through everything else. It was a little deflating, though. I'd definitely been ready to find some cats! It was a cute and fun little hidden object game overall, though, so it was fine.
I'm still set on clearing some of the games I have around, so I dug into a couple more short ones last night. One of them was Sonic Generations, which I'd picked up in a sale on the XBox store. It's really cute so far, and I felt like maybe it had some ridiculous speed even for a Sonic game. I only played the first four levels, though, so I don't have much opinion yet.
I played the first stage of Super Kiwi 64, too, and it was as dead on with the N64 vibes as Macbat had been, if not more. This'll be very short, I think, but I'm looking forward to playing more.
October 17th, 2023
Last night, I cleared a couple more rooms of A Castle Full of Cats, in my quest to 100% it. I only have one room left, I think, so I should get it finished tonight, or at least in my next play session.
October 16th, 2023
I was painfully tired for most of yesterday, so I ended up playing A Castle Full of Cats a lot. I beat the final boss before dinner, after maybe two hours of gameplay, but haven't cleared all the rooms yet. I'll go and do that over the next couple of nights.
I played another few levels of Kirby's Dream Land 3, too, clearing the first world.
Before bed, I also did this quick build Pokemon model kit of Eevee, for a boosted sense of accomplishment. It was overly easy, maybe, but so cute! Right now, it's on the bookshelf by my desk, dozing away. For barely any effort, this is one of my favorites I've done lately.
October 15th, 2023
As far as clearing the games I've got goes, last night was counterproductive. I was chatting with one of my friends about game sales, and ended up downloading a couple of three dollar games for Switch, Super Kiwi 64 and A Castle Full of Cats. I actually started playing A Castle Full of Cats before I went to sleep. It's a hidden object game where cats are hidden around some lineart, with a cute Castlevania riff as the setup. What I played last night was pretty easy, but it was level one of a casual game, so that's no dealbreaker.
I also built another Pokemon model last night, with Reshiram being my latest victim. The pearl-ish plastic on this one looks really nice, and only the wings had the strange "why won't these pieces snap together?" feeling I've been having with these Pokemon kits overall. Zekrom is over on my shelf, so I'll get to that fairly soon, too.
Today probably won't be a big games day. I want to tidy up, finish some craft projects I started during the week, and figure out my meal planning for next week. I'm sure I'll play something, though! I feel a bit set on finishing some of the smaller games I have around, so I'll see how that goes.
October 14th, 2023
Last night, I was trying to figure out how to tackle all of the games I've got and never finished, thinking about playing a classic, something really good, to patch up some of the holes in my gaming knowledge. I ended up setting up my Retron5 and popping in the Game Boy port of Gex: Deep Cover Gecko, which was, even by my standards, a counterintuitive way to approach the issue. From there, I fell asleep pretty fast, as I tend to when my decision making is at that level.
October 13th, 2023
I still had a stomachache last night, so I just played a level of Kirby's Dream Land 3 before bed. I cannot believe that Kirby had, and then lost, such a lovely and round cat friend. This is one of the great tragedies of the franchise.
October 12th, 2023
I got a new prescription yesterday, and taking it is making me feel kind of sick, so I'm not super peppy today. Last night was okay for games, though. I turned on my XBox to get some Game Pass time in and ended up trying Citizen Sleeper, which was really interesting so far! I definitely think I am going to die badly within the next few days, but prioritizing actions based on chances of success is an interesting mechanic. Plus, I've been in a reading mood lately, so a text heavy game was a good choice. (I can't access the screenshots I got last night, though, so just imagine all the distorted and unreadable text you could be looking at right now.)
I also played Lofi Ping Pong for about an hour. My biggest problem playing this game overall has probably been that it was hard for me to seperate the "sports action" from the rhythm game buttons, meaning that if my character was clear to the left and got a shot to the middle of the table, which the game's rules have you press "down" for, my brain would register that to get the shot, she needs to go left, leading me to hit "left." I finally got past that last night, and it threw a whole new snag in, where the ball changes its path every third shot. This'll take me a while.
October 11th, 2023
Right now, I'm not feeling good about the amount of games that I have stacked up to play, so, naturally, I turned on my Switch last night and went to play Kirby's Dream Land 3. My family had this for SNES, but I never played it that much. I'm not sure why, though. It's fun, the graphics are beautiful, and there's a cat in it. That being said, I might not pursue it for now and am not 100% sure as to why it didn't grab me this time, either.
Today I'm going to the doctor, so I'm off work. I'll probably turn on my neglected Xbox for a few minutes, but I don't really know what I'll play.
October 10th, 2023
I still feel really out of sorts and nervous today, so this won't be a very big post. I played Calico some more to relax last night, and it was an okay temporary solution. The cooking mechanics, where you become small and toss stuff into a cauldron, are cute, so my game time last night was centered on making cookies.
I made even more Halloween event headway in Pikmin Bloom yesterday, too, but am going to focus on just boosting my steps for the week rather than clearing event goals for today. I don't want to worry about setting up flower planting paths on my office breaks.
I couldn't get myself to go to bed without "finishing something" last night, either, so I built this quick Ali Express building block plant. It was a blind bag item when I ordered it, so the coffee cup flowerpot being labeled for October meant that I did want to build it this month. It was easy to build, and I think it looks decent, if not a bit mysterious.
October 9th, 2023
Today's post is extremely late, but I'm heart-poundingly anxious tonight and have no idea why. I ended up driving out to Wal-Mart when I was originally going to post, running some errands I originally meant to do Wednesday, and then got home and whipped up a cranberry orange muffin mix for some quick bread, which is in the oven now. Ultimately, none of this is helpful, but I'm gonna have muffin bread in 36 minutes, so it's not a net loss either.
Yesterday, I really played Pikmin Bloom a lot, getting through quite a few of the Halloween missions. I didn't get any new treat Pikmin, but I did get a couple more jack-o-lantern ones. They're not shiny and new, but they'll help quite a lot in mushroom battles.
I have a weird "I have to get things done!" feeling right now, too, so I built a little not-Lego kit I'd gotten at Five Below, of a Hello Kitty themed bubble tea shop. I actually really liked this kit. It was easy to build without being too simple, and I love Sanrio garbage, so the Hello Kitty-ness of it all really puts this over the top for me. I am delighted by it.
I don't know how much I'm going to play anything tonight, but I'm definitely going to throw some game on to try to stop panicking. Wish me luck!
October 8th, 2023
This is a late post, but that's because I've been having a very laid back day. I went to lunch with family, picked up a couple groceries, got some chicken thighs and peppers in my slow cooker, and even took a walk to get some frozen yogurt. It's been nice!
Yesterday, I did end up getting the chance to play quite a bit of Pikmin Bloom, getting a good start on the Halloween event and growing multiple special outfit Pikmin. The French fries on pictured below isn't a Halloween one. I just think it's cute.
I also built another model kit I had over on my shelf- a double pack of Pokemon models featuring Charizard and Dragonite! These were quite a bit easier than I expected, and I think they came out to be really nice, too. At worst, I feel like Charizard's main body was a little tough to snap together, but even that wasn't so bad. I liked building these, and they'll be cute bookshelf buddies.
October 7th, 2023
I'm not bothering with screenshots today because I have the good luck to both be getting destroyed by allergies and also be busy. It's the best.
A new Halloween event started in Pikmin Bloom yesterday, but it was a really nasty, rainy day whenever I had the chance to go outside, and sunny while I wasn't on work breaks. I did sneak in a couple of mushroom battles and clear a basic 1,000 steps mission, but it wasn't the start I wanted to make. I might try to sneak some easier event missions in today, too.
I played a very half-hearted round of Columns before bed, too.
October 6th, 2023
I haven't been sleeping well this week, so I was really zoned out last night. It led to bad gaming. I gave Lofi Ping Pong another go, and could do decently for a few minutes, but started getting flustered and just hitting the wrong buttons after that. There's only three buttons, so I felt a little dumb, but I just went to sleep from there.
A bit earlier than that, my phone needed to update, and it auto-installed a couple of games in the process. I'm really burnt out on Disney Tsum Tsum right now, so I gave one of them, Cubes Empire Champion, a try. It was fine, just the same game style as JT's Blocks on the Olde Internet's Yahoo games page (probably in the late 90s or very early '00s), or Roof Rats in the After Dark Games Collection. I guess more recently, it's the same as Pet Rescue Saga, too. I kind of like this game style, though, so it was fine. It had way too many ads, but I didn't delete it yet.
October 5th, 2023
I picked up Lofi Ping Pong on Switch, thinking it would be kind of funny and not much else. When I got to playing it last night, though, I really enjoyed it. It's a pretty interesting little rhythm game. I need to git gud badly, as the difficulty is way higher than I expected, but I got a really good sense of progression and my own improvement as I retried the fourth level again and again and again. I'm looking forward to playing this again tonight, and'll talk more about the mechanics on a post where I'm rushing to start my day a bit less.
October 4th, 2023
Today will be another quick post, since I got started later than I should have. I restarted Calico last night, a cat cafe and chatting with neighbors sim that I'd bought and played with a little when it first came out. It was really buggy then, but it's gotten a few patches, so I wanted to check it out again. Plus, I'm not very energetic lately, so it seemed good to pick a laid back game for this month. Last night, I didn't do much more than make my character, but it is ok to move forward slowly.
October 3rd, 2023
I didn't really play many games last night. I ended up getting everything done and watching a very strange and entertaining movie about a schoolgirl with psychic abilities, School in the Crosshairs, and then played my official game of "help, I'm tired," Columns. It was a decent evening.
October 2nd, 2023
Today was ok, but I crashed extremely hard after work and a trip out to Dollar General. I'm excited to show off the model kit I finished yesterday, though! Most of this was actually finished on Saturday- I just snapped her foot together on Sunday morning- but I built a really nifty Figurise Standard of Miorine from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. I'd had this for a while and was worried I'd screw up and ruin her, but even with a bit of my own amaturish detailing, I think she came out well! I'll have to build Suletta to match sooner rather than later.
I played Disney Tsum Tsum a bit yesterday, too, clearing the first mission bingo card.
There was a bit more that I wanted to play, but my PS3 and I had a strong disagreement. Hopefully, I'll stay awake long enough to reconcile with it tonight.
October 1st, 2023
I've procrastinated massively with doing today's post. I've worked on model kits, read manga, gone to Chili's, and outlined a meal plan that'll take me through to next weekend. I've also procrastinated at picking a game to focus on playing this month, other than carrying Super Mario Odyssey forward. Last month was decent, though. I made ok progress in some games, and actually finished A Short Hike, so I feel pretty good about this month, too.
Yesterday, though, I just played 50+ games of Disney Tsum Tsum on a family member's couch. I couldn't pull any decent new characters for the month in the gatcha, even though I had plenty of pulls, so I couldn't play the month's ending event effectively. I did finish up the beginners' coloring card missions, though, and started in on Mission Bingo. It was fine, but I got three more gatcha pulls and still couldn't get any more of the monthly characters. Oh, well!
